Donations will help us continue the series.

Movies cost money and without it many great films never make it. Many times our stories are told by people who don’t reflect who we are and the story gets “white washed”. Ours won't be one of them so we’ve cleaned out our bank accounts, charged up our credit cards, drive at night for rideshares (Uber and Lyft. If you see us say hello.), begging family members, and all but sold our bodies (Does plasma donation count?)… but still need your help.

What kind of problems and challenges is America facing? “From Jim to James Crow” is a social documentary about America during the establishment of Jim Crow and the transition into the James Crow of today. This documentary contains interviews with several of America’s professionals, activists, authors, and everyday people. We are in the process of interviewing people who’ve experienced racism, are opposed to it, have fought against it and those who don’t think it exists to make this film as objective as possible. Help us raise funds to complete the production stage and on to the film festival stage of our independent social documentary about America.

A little about us: We are a mother and son team (Yes that is us below) who've already had a bit of success with a feature film. We're military veterans and feel it is our duty to address hard hitting topics.

So why is racism in America an interesting subject for a documentary?

America – the rich country where dreams come true. The home of the free and land of the brave. On paper America and all it stands for is great. In reality America has always been a country divided. While fighting for freedom from Britain up to World War II, America maintain its status of having second class citizens. Correction. During slavery and for years after black and brown persons were not considered citizens. While fighting against the Nazi Regime in World War II America the beautiful still enforced laws of segregation.

Up until the last presidential election, America Jim Crow no longer exists in the format of signs saying “whites only” but the micro-aggressions lingered. We’ve witnessed it with the housing market and police killings of black citizens. Black people understand you don’t have to be called a racial slur to experience racism.

With the technical evolution of cell phones, now the rest of the world has witnessed the brutality some of America’s citizens endured in silence. And, these people have spoken out. In recent years a movement, the largest since Civil Rights, Black Live Matter has sprung up and became the voice of the second class citizens. Different nationalities banded together to say, Black Lives Matter and the world began to listen.

Under the new president times seem to make a shift once again. Now, there has been a resurgence of overt racism with a rallying cry of “Making America Great Again” while citizens of color have wonder when has America ever been great for them?

Why the title "From Jim to James Crow"?

From Jim to James Crow is the transformative name and a more refined era of Jim Crow. James Crow is known to move in silence and when it does rear its ugly head it hides behind the words of “Making America Great Again” and “Reverse Racism”. In the work place it hides behind, “Not being the perfect fit”, “We’ll reconsider the offer on your next evaluation” and  “Here’s an award instead of a promotion.” James is also hidden behind the veil of social media and fake accounts.

What motivates us?

As military veterans we’ve seen America at its best and its worst. We see the potential for what this country can be. We want to bring to the forefront those who’ve endured and benefited from Jim Crow and are alive for the transition as well as to pay homage to the protestors. After all, didn’t this country start off a protest? We want to dig deeper. Way deeper.

Yes, we're aware of that some may find this movie a bit controversial - but we, believe that working together can transform America into the great country we are promised on paper. No, we aren’t expecting world peace, but we refuse to pretend the sins of yesterday aren’t playing out right before us. History doesn’t need to repeat itself.

HOW DOES YOUR DONATION WORK FOR YOU AND US?

Funding includes all phases of production which started on September 1st through release in November 2018. Our goal is to shoot until we have interviewed 50-75 people. To help cut cost we will only be filming on the weekends. Let's not forget the teasers we will continue to put out prior to the actual film dates. Thanks to flexible funding we get to keep whatever donations we receive, so if we don't meet our funding goal we STILL get to make the movie! YES!! And you'll still get to see it!

BUT:

If we don't make our full funding goal, we will have to make serious changes to the people we interview and we are focusing on America as a whole, not just certain geographic locations. We have worked so hard and want to make the best version of this movie possible! That means we really need to meet our goal!

WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN! What we need are:

1. Donations.

2. Sharing on social media/email.

In return for your donations, we have all kinds of rewards, as you'll see to the right, including being the first to see the finished film right in your own home!

EVERY DONATION MATTERS! Not just because of the money, but for the support in general and to raise our number of backers. And if you simply cannot donate even $1, but you love the project as much as we do, PLEASE SHARE ON YOUR OWN SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES BY CLICKING THE "SHARE TOOLS" ABOVE AND ASK YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME! Every $1 counts!

Ultimately, our goal is for this film to go into the streaming realm of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and iTunes. Prior to that we will submit the final product to film festivals. Yes, we think the concept is that great! It would also be awesome if it were picked up by a network. This also costs money.

WHY ARE WE ASKING FOR FUNDING?

Here is a breakdown of where your money will go! We have pulled many favors already, the producers have cleared their bank accounts EVEN DRIVING FOR UBER AND LYFT, we have some free locations and will continue to try for more, but at the end of the day, the cost of paying a crew and actors adds up, even if you have a few interns.

CAST: This is a documentary so the actual cast isn’t an issue, but getting to them is. We need the funds to travel to their respect locations.

CREW: We need someone to always run the camera, a sound person, and someone for lightening. All these take a film from social media quality to actually being allowed on a streaming format.

EQUIPMENT AND SET OPERATIONS: We can have all the crew we want but without equipment that would suck. Amazing lenses cost.

POST: Shooting a film is the easy part. Editing makes or breaks a film. Editors spend hours piecing together the footage.  Editing, audio application, sound and visual effects, grading, Purchase of archive material and royalties, etc.

MARKETING: Getting the finished project out to the masses. This will take social media and more to accomplish. There are people who specialize in marketing and this phase will be left up to them… for a fee of course.

Once complete we will be submitting to film festivals. Each one charges a fee. Our goal is for festivals and to upload to streaming sites; Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, Amazon, etc.

TOTAL = $30,000.

The original goal is the bare-bones amount needed to cover the costs of making this film. With your continued support, we can make it even better!

SYNOPSIS

Logline: This is the ultimate documentary depicting the lives of people living now, who endured Jim Crow and are now living in the age of the 45 President. The documentary covers their way of life during segregation and how they’ve evolved into the now of 45’s rallying cries to the KKK and Nazis.

From Jim to James Crow reflects the daily struggles of people of color and their allies across the U.S. The documentary dives deep beyond the mask POC put up in the public eye in order to make it through unscathed. Many Americans now are familiar with the coded language of the country’s racial hegemony. While some shun certain words, others make anthems out of them.

As we ring in the New Year we like to reflection on how far we've come. Earlier this year we started out traveling across the country to get interviews. What we got was so much more. Update #3

The latest! We are excited to announce that not only did we have the pleasure of interviewing Cyrus Webb for the project, but he will be joining us and helping out as one of our narrators. If you don't know Cyrus Webb, you need to get to know him. He is the host of Conversations Live Radio and interviews some of the major shakers in film, television, books and music. In fact, the cast of the Have and Have Not's, Greenleaf, and Saints and Sinners have made regular stops. But wait there's more! Cyrus is also an author and one of Amazon's top product reviewers. Like I said, if you don't know him, you need to get to knowing him.

Update #2

Happy Holidays!

Just a day after Thanksgiving and we're going full swing ahead. We are editing the pilot for the documentary and have come across some gems.

Did you know that that Black Panther Party not only started the free lunch program that the government uses today, but that they actually gave away over 10,000 bags of groceries to those in need? This is why it is important to tell these stories. If not us then who?

Help us continue to bring this documentary to life by making a donation. Even if it is $1 it will be a great help to us in making this docu-series come to life. We are aiming for a February release of the pilot and the first season to be finished filming by the summer. Thank you for your continued support!

We're working diligently behind the scenes to ensure we have a quality product. Last week we had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Greg Lockett. He's a mover and shaker in the film industry as well as a motivational speaker. This week we are off to Louisville, KY and Indianapolis, IN.
