The journey of the project began back in the spring of 2019. The empowerment CDC through ENDS was instrumental in getting a new roof on their home. Empowerment CDC brought awareness to situation by starting a fundraiser and invited CBS 19 to come out to do a story. AVCO Roofing seen the story and decided to become involved. They supplied the labor, Lowes in Longview supplied the material and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church provided lunch for the workers. A relation was birth with Empowerment CDC and the Hervey's who are the only two remaining members of the Freeman Chapel Baptist Church. As they grow older their concern was that the church property would be put into good hands so the property was donated to the Empowerment CDC, on Thursday, February 4th, 2021.

The Empowerment Community Development Corporation, Texas African American Museum and through it's Historical Preservation Program seek to preserve and revitalize the property. To better serve this project, the Wood County ENDS Committee is being put in place. This committee is made up of mostly Wood County residents who live in and care about their community.
