About Flux Now

Flux Now is dedicated to community development through education, collaboration and creative exploration. We do this through cross-disciplinary workshops designed to develop our members’ potential and enjoyment of life. Flux Now is commited to providing this opportunity to all interested people, regardless of income, gender or age.

Girls in technology: let's inspire them!

The percentage of computing occupations held by women has been declining since 1991

Women in IT: The Facts [PDF], 2009, The National Center for Women & Technology (NCWIT)

About the Class

Flux Now has created a course designed to inspire girls with technology. Blending fashion, art, computer assisted design and 3D printing, this summer-camp experience will send students home with the experience of finding inspiration, refining that idea and then using technology to bring it into life. Students will finish the class with at least one piece of 3D printed jewelry they have designed themselves.

This Fundly campaign will enable Flux Now to offer this class & waive tuition for all participants.

Flux Now believes girls & young women should be at least as stoked as boys by technology. We also believe that everyone should have access. We won’t be “gendering” this class, boys will of course be welcome. We will be reaching out to girls as the primary pool of participants in an effort to help provide an alternate path to technology awareness.

About the Jewelry

Students will design jewelry using real world design techniques: pencils, pens, paint and collage. Their favorite work will be digitized and integrated into one of our basic design forms as a 3D model. From the models, we’ll print out wearable jewelry made from Polylactic Acid (PLA), a bio-friendly, renewable resource! Students (or parents) will have the opportunity to order stainless steel or sterling silver copies of their designs at the lowest cost possible (it’s surprisingly affordable!).
