Update #7

TO CLARIFY: The Fundly page is STILL LIVE and you can STILL DONATE- the account connected to the Fundly page is now a direct link to the bank account of the Greater St. Louis Foodbank. ALL of the funds raised on this Fundly previously and going forward will DIRECTLY feed children and their families in the Ferguson/Florissant area. I am bowing out of leading the charge in terms of the social media campaign and maintenance of all of this personally because I need to get back to my "regular" life as a 5th Grade teacher at Mangum Elementary in Bahama, NC (GO EXPLORERS!). Our school year starts in two weeks and I have a lot of work to do to get my room ready and get ready to serve my own students- I'm also a first year teacher (I used to work in theatre) so I have a LOT of work to get done before my kids arrive for their first day of school on 8/25. This has been an amazing experience and I am thrilled to have been a part of this but I don't have the know-how and the man hours to continue to be the primary fundraiser. Myself, my husband and a friend were the only ones managing the social media and the emails and phone calls coming in and we're pooped! I literally JUST took the first shower I've taken in 48 hours! As of now we have not set a date for when or if this Fundly page will disappear and I am eager to see how much further it can go with the folks at the St. Louis Food Bank and will post updates of how the money we've- or I should say you've- raised is helping children in the Ferguson/Florissant area.
SO- KEEP DONATING! And I am still happily available for media inquiries, but I've more than accomplished my goal and am amazed to have been a small part of what has been such a wonderful show of generosity and the amazing connective powers of social media.

Update from the St. Louis Area Foodbank (8/22/14):

It has been amazing to see the work being done in the Ferguson community to make sure that kids and families that are in need of food assistance are getting the help they need.

We were thrilled to see that the Ferguson-Florissant school district made the decision to provide lunch for students this week.

At the Foodbank, we have been concentrating our efforts on providing food assistance to the United Way of Greater St. Louis’ Community Resource Drop-In Center at the Dellwood  Recreation Center (10266 W. Florissant Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63136).  To date, we have delivered more than 14,000 pounds of food to be distributed to kids and families affected by the unrest in Ferguson.

On Saturday, August 23 and into the early part of the next week, we are using our Foodbank trucks to pick up donations of food, personal care items, school supplies and cleaning supplies from area businesses that will be delivered directly to the Community Resource Drop-In Center.

On Monday, August 25 we are scheduled to receive the first shipment of cereal that will be distributed among our partner agencies that serve Ferguson and the surrounding communities.

More food should be arriving later in the week.  Using the funds raised by this Fundly campaign, we will be providing more food to help ensure that students in the Ferguson/Florissant school district and their families will not have to choose between paying for food and other basic necessities as the town rebuilds and recovers.

This Fundly campaign has ended, but if you would like to contribute to the Ferguson Fund, please visit the United Way of Greater St. Louis website.

If you would like to support the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s mission of feeding hungry people throughout the bi-state region, please visit our donation page. If you would like the donation to go specifically to our efforts in Ferguson and the surrounding areas of North St. Louis County, please put “Ferguson” in the comments section.

From Julianna Mendelsohn (originator of the campaign):

As the world watches the events unfolding in Ferguson, many people have thought "how can I help?". As a public school teacher, my first thought is always about the children involved in any tragic situation like this. When I found out school had been canceled for several days as a result of the civil unrest, I immediately became worried for the students in households with food instability. Many children in the US eat their only meals of the day, breakfast and lunch, at school. With school out, kids are undoubtedly going hungry.

ALL OF THIS MONEY WILL GO TO FEED KIDS IN FERGUSON. A dollar or a hundred dollars, it doesn't matter. You will be helping to put food in the mouth of a child who needs it. Regardless of your opinion on the civil unrest in Ferguson, there is no need for innocent children to go hungry because of it.

Look what WE did!

The campaign is ending today and Fundly is working as we speak to start tranferring the money over to The Greater St Louis Area Food Bank. The money will be used in the Ferguson/Florissant area over the next year to feed children and their families. Working with the people in their office and the Fundly office has been a wonderful experience: when the Fundly CEO calls you at 8 PM and gives you his own personal cell phone number you know you're working with great people. This has been a tremendous ride from start to finish and I thank every one of you who helped in any way: donating, RTing and Tweeting, Facebooking, emailing, everything. A big thanks to Buzzfeed, The Daily Dot, WNCN Raleigh and the Christian Science Monitor for their interest in this crazy story and for helping to generate the buzz that got us to $38k. Thank you to everyone who contacted the Food Bank to volunteer and thank you to everyone who helped me find the food bank in the first place, namely Robin Wheeler-Barber. Thank you to Marissa Langlais for creating the www.feedthestudents.org website. I feel like I need to reiterate that they and I are, or were, complete strangers, and they both did this spontaneously in the spirit of giving- in the case of the website it was somehow up and running about 30 minutes tops after she said it was going to be. The speed with which this morphed from "I think I'll hit some of my friends up for some $ and maybe I'll have a couple hundred or a thousand bucks to give to a Ferguson charity" to "Hey, the Fundly CEO is calling and you've got $38,000 in the coffers" is still mind-boggling in the best way.
If anyone you know doesn't understand the appeal of social media: lead them to our story. Not mine- ours- I feel like I was just very lucky to be the conduit for this amazing collective action.
Immense thanks also to my "inner circle" who sprung to action to help once I realized how big this was getting: my husband, Ian Mendelsohn, my friend Chris Ayers who is a Tweeting machine, and my friend Brian Quinn of Silverbackks who served as my "Do Gooder Guru" throughout the process.
Thanks to Dennis Hu, Fundly CEO, Krystal Gandola, Fundly Community Manager, Verletta Cole, VP of Development for the St. Louis Area Food Bank (and new grandmother as of a few hours ago! Mazel Tov!) and Benjamin Spirk, VP of Finance for the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
So: the party is over, so to speak, but man,it was a great one, and we will be able to help countless kids in the Ferguson/Florissant area because of it.
