On December 20th, the recently purchased trailer home of one of the third graders in my special day class burnt down. The home was parked in the vineyard where the father works next to a storage building. The fire department was unable to identify the reason for the fire. The family lost everything, including the car they had just bought.
I have gotten to know the Santiago family this year, and their son with autisim, Uziel, has been in the special education program I work for since preschool. They are an extremely loving and supporting family. Uziel’s mother, Anastasia, even came to my classroom with Uziel for a few days at the beginning of the year to help him transition to his new environment. When Uziel’s younger brother got off the school bus at the charred remains of his home he told his mom, “Oh, Uziel is going to be so upset.”
Thankfully, no one was injured during the fire as no one was home. The cats are safe. Photos, cash, belongings – gone. This family needs to rebuild their life and buy a new trailer. They are currently staying at a hotel for three days courtesy of the Red Cross. They are looking into staying at Catholic Family Charity Services, which can offer three months in a dormitory-style room while they put their life back together. Your donation will help them do this. You can also donate locally in the North Bay at any Exchange Bank. When making donations at an Exchange Bank please let the teller know the funds should go to Luciano E Santiago-Jimenz for Uziel N Santiago-Cruz.
Thank you so much. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
