Leyda and her elderly mother, who is struggling with Alzheimer's, have been evicted after the recent death of her father and a long, nasty legal fight. Please contribute to help them find a new home and some peace ASAP.
Leyda Paz's father lost their family home in Central L.A. to the bank during his long battle with cancer. The property was bought as an investment property (not the owner's primary residence) in October 2020 and the new owner immediately began proceedings to evict Leyda, her mother and father. The new owner stopped by the home often to harass them and threaten arrest, even knowing Leyda's dying father was in hospice in the home and that the family had nowhere to go. When Leyda's father sadly passed in November 2020, the owner increased his attack on Leyda. The court ruled that Leyda was a caregiver to her father, not an "official" tenant, stripping her of her tenant rights and eviction protection.
After telling them they had until the end of March to move, the new owner cruelly evicted them without notice early in the morning on 3/10. They are now without a home and very shaken up, especially Leyda's mother who has Alzheimers. The new owner has not offered any financial assistance to help them relocate and feels it is "not his problem." We are raising immediate funds for them to relocate as soon as they find a new apartment. The Paz family has legal support, but hopes to escape this terror as soon as possible.
With your help, we hope to raise enough to cover their legal bills and enable Leyda and her ill mother to comfortably move into a new home where they can finally have the peace to recover from this harassment and grieve their father and husband. Any funds above the amount needed to secure a new place and pay legal fees, will go towards Leyda's rent and her caregiving of her mother, whose Alzheimer's has worsened since her father's death.
Leyda and her mother are incredibly strong women who have been through so much. They are so grateful for any amount that you can give to support their family and a brighter future. Thank you!
