Two great moms transformed the life of a dog meat trade survivor.
Elly (爱爱) is a beautiful dog(4) rescued from a Yulin slaughterhouse. She spent her first month after rescue hiding in a dark corner(1). Xiao Yu, Elly’s mom in Yulin, showed her the love and patience that she needed to recover and thrive(2). Now Elly lives in sunny California with Anne(3), her California mom, her dad, two human brothers, and two doggie sisters.
These two wonderful mothers’ selfless acts epitomize our core belief that our "end the dog meat trade" movement begins with our love of dogs and is sustained by our faith in humanity. Happy Mother's Day to Xiao Yu, Anne, and all of the wonderful moms.

The Yulin "ugly" boy got adopted!
Our team in Yulin shared this happy news with us.
4-year-old Ben Lee, a slaughterhouse survivor, has been passed over for adoption many times. For some reason, local people think he is "ugly," but we certainly disagree! Finally, he got adopted over this past weekend.
Duo Duo Project is delighted to find out how local Yulin people have accepted the idea of "adopt don't buy." The activist friends we work with in Yulin have thanked us for bringing the new concepts of adoption and spay and neuter to the area.

ANOTHER DOMINO JUST FELL.!
Zhuhai (珠海) Guangdong, a beautiful resort town in southern China, THE 2ND CITY TO BAN THE DOG AND CAT MEAT TRADE.
Zhuhai local government held a press conference on the morning of April 14, to announce strict regulations on the Prohibition of Wild Animals which clarified the scope of the prohibition of wild animals and the range of edible animals in Zhuhai. The regulations also include the prohibition of domestic pets such as cats and dogs being used as food. The regulations will take effect on May 1, 2020.
Duo Duo Project is very thrilled to receive all the good news from our team in China. In the meantime, Duo Duo and our China team have begun strategizing on our next projects.
We believe, In the wake of the coronavirus, serious attention and urgency are being given to banning the dog and cat meat trades. We are thrilled, but in the meantime, we feel sad too: that it took something as drastic as a massive pandemic to accelerate the progress. However, we need to view it as at least some good coming out of such bad.

On April 8, China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs categorized dogs as "COMPANION ANIMALS" when soliciting public opinions on what animals should be included in the livestock category. This polling is related to legislation that bans the trade of wildlife animals. As we know, this legislation is a result of concerns about the spread of the recent coronavirus.
Most of our contacts in China believe that the categorization could lead to an eventual ban on the consumption of dogs. We also hope that this can happen.
This could be a historic move. We will keep you posted on the progress. Thank you for your support and many thanks to the tireless Chinese animal activists. We may be seeing light at the end of this dark tunnel.

Something to cheer you up in these hard times
During this difficult time that presents us with many great challenges, we are happy to share the exciting news.
About one month ago, we spoke of the possibility of Shenzhen city (深圳) in Guangdong Province, becoming the first city in China to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat. (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/feb/27/shenzhen-could-be-first-city-in-china-to-ban-eating-of-dogs-and-cats
On March 31, 2020, this long-anticipated regulation was passed. The Shenzhen Congress (深圳人大常委) passed a ban on the consumption of wild animals, which includes dogs and cats.
While many works still remain, many loopholes need to be closed, and this is only a regional law, it is a win for the fight against dog and cat meat trade. This ban is historic and may very well be the first in a domino effect that brings down the cruel dog and cat meat trade worldwide.
We are very proud of Duo Duo Project's team in Guangzhou (the capital of Guangdong) who has been instrumental in pushing the passing of this law. They quickly designed an easy application to inform and educate the local people about the law and encourage them to reach out to their representatives in the People's Congress.

Here are some uplifting photos from our team in Yulin. One of our members was stuck in his home town under quarantine. His village is close to Yulin city. During the lock-down period, he decided to give his farmer neighbor's dogs a bath. Most of the dogs raised by farmers in Yulin have never had a bath! He hopes after seeing how beautiful and happy the dogs are, the farmer's heart and mind will be changed regarding eating dogs, and he will spread the word.( Photo: HAPPY famerm's dog after his first-ever bath!)
