Hello! My name is Emma Vignola, and this November I will begin my year-long journey volunteering with Raising Up Hope for Uganda (RUHU) working with the medical outreach program there. I will be assisting with medical care for the children who live on the streets, in orphanages, in the safe house, and helping in any ways I can.
RUHU is an organization started by Patrick Ssenyonjo, who grew up on the streets of Uganda as an orphan. At the age of 16, he was granted the opportunity for adoption in the US, but instead stayed and started RUHU. The mission of RUHU is “To help orphaned, abandoned, homeless, and vulnerable children by providing shelter, clothing, medical, educational, spiritual, and other needs.”
I’ve always wanted to work in healthcare, and finally started my journey at age 17 as a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA). For the past two years, I’ve continued working in healthcare while pursuing my bachelors degree on a pre-medical track. My passion is learning about how to provide adequate healthcare to people in developing and poor countries, especially to women and children who are often left with inadequate care. Volunteering in Uganda will help me to better understand the healthcare needs that exist there, provide me with progress in my field, and help fulfill my passion. I plan on eventually going to medical school in the pursuit of becoming a surgeon, and my goal is to not only serve the marginalized in the United States, but also to return to Uganda to aid in the growth of the medical outreach program there.
Any help you can provide towards reaching my goals is so valuable and appreciated- whether it’s your monetary support, your prayers, or spreading this call far and wide, no effort will go unnoticed. I plan to chronicle my journeys and learning along the way, so you can see your efforts in action! I will be using donations to help cover the costs of my stay at the volunteer house, airfare, visa renewals every 3 months, and travel insurance. If I am fortunate to raise more than is needed for my time in Uganda, all extra funds will be donated to RUHU to help purchase more medical supplies and other necessary items.
