Emergency Support for Ukrainian Host Family

Emergency Support for Ukrainian Host Family

From Alex Wilson

I spent summer 2013 living with a wonderful Ukrainian host family in the suburbs of Kyiv. Now, my host, her mother, & her toddler have fled to Poland & her husband is fighting in the reserves, without adequate supplies.

Hi all -

Thank you for the overwhelming support you've provided for my Ukrainian host family! With your donations I've been able to send the following funds and supplies over to them:

For Oksana, her mother, and her son:
- $1000 sent via Western Union to them in Poland

For Oksana's husband, stationed in Ternopil in the Ukrainian army:
- 1 body armor vest with soft armor plates
- 1 individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)
- 1 pair of boots
- 2 pairs of socks
- 1 camo jacket
- 1 camo shirt
- 1 camo pair of pants
- 1 winter shirt
- 1 belt
- 1 pair tactical sunglasses
- 1 pair gloves
- 1 winter hat
- 1 G-shock tactical watch
- 2 velcro Ukrainian military ID patches

The supplies for Oksana's husband are being shipped out by me the week of 3/21 via FedEx and Meest, directly to his local post office in Western Ukraine. I am sending via air mail which is not cheap but should result in delivery in 7-10 days...

Thank you all again for your support. I will post a follow-up update once I can confirm the supplies have arrived to Sasha.

More Info

I spent summer 2013 living with Oxana and her family in the western suburbs of Kyiv. They took me in and treated me like a member of the family, graciously hosting me for a few months while I completed my Russian language studies in college. Fast forward 9 years, and their country and their city have been invaded by Russia, with some of the heaviest fighting in Kyiv thus far taking place in and around their neighborhood. Oxana, her mother, and her toddler were able to escape out of Kyiv and into Poland, where they are trying to settle down again with some support from local Poles. Their lives have been uprooted and they need assistance to rebuild and recover. Oxana's husband Sasha, meanwhile, remained in Ukraine and joined the reserve defense forces, but is in need of basic non-lethal supplies such as boots, a uniform, radios, shirts, socks, etc. I have already donated hundreds of dollars to various non-profits and relief funds for Ukraine, but this far more personal and a chance for me to help those who once helped me. I am raising funds to help defray part of the cost of supplies and monetary support to both Oxana and to her husband, and to cover the cost of either shipping them to Poland or transporting them there myself. All told I expect to spend or donate well in excess of $1,000 but appreciate any & all donations. Slava Ukraini! Heroiam Slava!
