Emergency Fund

Emergency Fund

From Rebecca Marie

I'm about to be homeless in a country where I barely know anyone, because someone took all my money. I lose my immigration status if I leave before I completed all the process, and couldn't even pay for a flight.

3 weeks ago I signed a contract for a sublet apartment, and handed over all my savings for deposits and rent. Everything seemed fine and a contract was signed. Then, 3 days before moving in I was told that the previous tenant actually took this money and owed back-rent on top of it. I may or may not be able to get this money back one day, but definitely not any time soon, because for now it's just gone.

I have a shaky immigrant status, no family, and still need to prove my eligibility, so I also need to worry about paying an immigration lawyer and generally funding my current life on a freelancer salary until I have a secure status.

I don't have any family, and have exhausted the options of people I can stay with for the moment. At this point, I couldn't even afford to fly somewhere where I know more people I could live with until I'm more financially secure again. So as of right now, I might be homeless within a few days.

My friend and I have been frantically looking for solutions for the past few days, calling anyone we know, calling the consulate, trying to figure out what to do, and have gotten not much help so far.

$2,500 is what the girl from the sublet took from me, but really anything helps. I need to somehow secure a place to live for 2 months until I've been able to work enough and stand on my own feet again. Of course I'll stay anywhere from hostels to sublets, but it's been difficult and expensive to find any availabilities at all.

I'm stuck right now and really scared, and I'm incredibly grateful to anyone who even considers helping.
