Elder Care Support for Alfredo & Luisa

Elder Care Support for Alfredo & Luisa

From Amarillys Rodriguez

I'm raising money to help my parents with home health aid assistance while we secure more permanent resources. Your support will help us pay for a few hours of additional personal care per week for about two months.

Wow! We have reached and exceeded our original goal in just a few days! Whether folks could give or not, I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from friends new and old, near and far. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all who have contributed, shared messages of love and strength, and are sending healing thoughts and prayers to our family.

After delays due to the pandemic and anxiety, our dad recently had a check-in with his primary care provider, as well as home visits from a nurse, physical therapist, and a social worker from the insurance company to assess his needs. While he likely is not eligible for free services, we are hopeful that these steps will provide some referrals or pathways to stable, affordable assistance. Meanwhile, we have been preparing for my mother's surgery with my sisters and I making plans for time off to help at home as my mom awaits details on the day's schedule from the hospital.

With time left before my mom's surgery, and my birthday, and Parkinson's Awareness Month going through April, we are raising the campaign goal. Any funds over our initial $2000 goal will go towards:

- Paying Tina an increased rate for the agreed upon schedule
- Potentially adding more time with Tina if it works for her schedule
- Paying for any service or program fees, medical equipment, supplies or related items not covered by insurance

Let's see how far we can go!

Thank you!

Background and Introduction

April 15 is my birthday, and April also happens to be Parkinson's Awareness Month. Our father, Alfredo Rodriguez, was diagnosed with early or young-onset Parkinson's and has lived with the disease for more than two decades. Due to this personal connection, a few years ago for my birthday I did a fundraiser that raised more than one thousand dollars for the Parkinson's Foundation to support treatment research. This year, I am doing another fundraiser but with a more personal purpose.

Our dad is now 75 years old, and the disease is at an advanced stage that requires him to have intensive support that is demanding in terms of time and energy. Our mom, Luisa Rivera, has been the primary caregiver for our dad, but she has her own health issues that need attention, including diabetes, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer last fall. She is scheduled for surgery on my birthday, April 15th.

While our family is doing what we can to help, we know that our parents need more care than we can provide by ourselves. With referrals from their medical providers, we are seeking supportive services that will improve their quality of life while staying home as long as possible, such as visiting nurses, home physical therapy, homemaking, medication management, meals on wheels, and more. As we work to set these resources up and secure them for longer terms, in the meantime we have found Tina, an acquaintance with medical assisting experience, to help with personal care tasks.

Our request

We are asking for your support to help us pay Tina fairly to assist our parents with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, dressing, walking, using the restroom, personal hygiene, and attending appointments. Tina will be visiting for a few hours a day for two days a week while our mom recovers from her surgery and undergoes chemo and/or radiation treatment. Not only will your support help our parents directly in these ways, but Tina's presence also allows my mom and other family caretakers some extra peace of mind and time to rest.

Any support you can offer will be much appreciated. Every bit helps. Thank you!
