Touch down Elcho Island!

Our first night we were welcomed by the Hope for Health participants with a huge fish BBQ on the beach.

Catching up with everyone was gorgeous.
Many of the participants still fighting fit. Many also slightly fallen off the band wagon.
Its challenging to keep up with the good work for the best of us.

Today we started the day as per usual with a big morning walk on the beach.

Tomorrow we will be running testing , naturopathic check ins and running workshops.
Plans to build a Veggie Garden and get the whip out with the soft drink, processed foods and and sugar that has crept back in for some.

Thanks again for your support.

RETURNING TO THE NORTHERN TERRITORY TO SUPPORT THE ONGOING HEALTH OF THE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY OF ELCHO ISLAND

1 month ago, I volunteered my naturopathic services at the TOGETHER retreat, a cross cultural initiative run by Hope for Health, aimed at tangibly addressing the health crisis faced by a group of the Indigenous community of Elcho island in the NT.

The group I worked with on the retreat are beautiful people, stuck in a situation of poor health, representing the majority of the  community of indigenous Australians on Elcho and the wider Northern Territory. Historically, they have had little to no education about diet and nutrition and as a result now suffer from lifestyle related conditions like diabetes, chronic pain, liver, kidney and cardiovascular disease. Almost all participants were heavily medicated on a cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs for conditions that they had eaten their way into, under the influence of a western diet.

Over the course of the retreat, the participants underwent a HUGE health transformation, facilitated by detoxification, a complete diet overhaul and a support team including Dr's, Nurses, Naturopaths, Osteo's and Massage therapists to help them along the way.

Many of the patients were able to come off medication that they had been told that they would be on for life!! Tears of Joy were daily experiences as participants described being pain free, able to move freely, new found happiness and feelings of Hope for their future and the future of their families.

What I experienced during this two week period has profoundly changed my life, my outlook on health care and it has made me aware of the dire straights situation of the health of people I now care very deeply for.

I’m still in contact with my patients and adopted family, with updates on their daily food diary, exercise program and feelings of joy for being able to stay committed to their program.

Directing Naturopath Helen Padarin returns to the NT in 2 weeks time and needs practitioner help on the ground to assess and provide support. I feel so lucky to have been asked by Helen to join her!

Unfortunately there is no extra finances to fund my trip and time spent over there and so, I am reaching out to gain financial support to get me there and support my time volunteering back on Elcho island.

I’m aiming to raise $3000, but any donations, no matter how small the amount, would be HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks again.
