El Paso Jazz Girls

From Amanda Ekery

In the last decade only 7 girls have made Texas All-State Jazz Band. That’s crazy! This July I’m starting El Paso Jazz Girls, a clinic for female identifying high school students to help change this demographic.

In the last decade only 7 girls have made Texas All-State Jazz Band. That’s crazy! This July I’m starting El Paso Jazz Girls, a clinic for female identifying high school students to help change this demographic. The clinic will cover all-region jazz music, jazz theory fundamentals, listening sessions, and more!  100% free for students Taught by female musicians July 5-6, 9am-4pm, at UTEP.

I’m so happy to be teaming up with some amazing women to teach El Paso Jazz Girls. Stephanie Munoz, an El Paso native, is a phenomenal saxophonist and teaching artist. She currently teaches for the Boston Public School District, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and is passionate about sharing music. Grace Ward is a fantastic guitarist, bassist, and vocalist who is one of the 7 girls who has made Texas All-State Jazz Band! She is joining us from Austin to teach at El Paso Jazz Girls. Cassie Cardenas is a powerhouse trombonist. She teaches at several schools in El Paso including Hanks and Desert View, in addition to playing in the Eklectic Jazz Group and the El Paso Wind Symphony. I am a pianist/vocalist and currently live in Boston. I hold two degrees in Jazz Performance and create workshops for students at after-school programs, health facilities, and community centers. I'm excited to share what I have learned with my hometown.

I am asking for your support to keep this clinic free for girls to attend. Your donation will specifically be used towards teaching artist fees, transportation, and music for participants. I was fortunate to receive a Spark Award Grant from the New England Conservatory to cover my airfare. However, I still need to cover transportation costs for Stephanie and Grace, pay all teaching artists for their teaching time, and order music for participants.

With your support we can help promote gender equality in jazz music and beyond. This clinic will be an opportunity for young females across El Paso to meet each other, create a support system for auditions, and play music together. I will personally write you a thank you note, express gratitude in all our clinic press material, and you will be supporting El Paso Jazz Girls’ inaugural clinic!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your support!
