I am raising money in order to publish a book about eating disorders and recovery. Eating disorders affect 20 million women and 10 million men in America and have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes, all genders, all socio-economic statuses, and all ethnicities: they do not discriminate. I am working to publish a book that will help widen the understanding of what suffering with an eating disorder really means.
There is a false assumption that one can see from the outside whether or not someone has an eating disorder. But the reality is, eating disorders are mental illnesses. Any physical signs of the disease are purely symptoms and not the illness itself. A person doesn't need to look emaciated to be suffering, and the expectation that anyone with an eating disorder must look like this is dangerous for the vast population of those suffering who don't. In fact, the majority of people suffering from an eating disorder appear normal if not overweight.
My goal in publishing this book is to open an unapologetic conversation about living with an eating disorder and the difficulty that can come when you don't "look" like you have a problem.
