About Me

I was diagnosed with dermatomyositis in November 2019 although I expect that I had been misdiagnosed for over 10 years. My diagnosis came after months of feeling weaker, walking slower, tripping on air, and struggling to climb stairs. For over a year, it had been easy for me to become off balance when walking my dogs and I had several face plants in the mud courtesy of a rowdy dog. Then, in the fall of 2019, I had a couple of falls that I couldn't brush off as caused by something else. This led me back to the doctor with an explanation of my long medical history and a reminder that I still had an unexplained increase in my liver enzymes that had been brushed off as fatty liver disease. Thankfully, my nurse practitioner listened and did blood work which showed a positive ANA. She sent me to a great rheumatologist who gave me the diagnosis that I had expected of dermatomyositis. The "dermato" part was aa little unexpected at first but then I understood that the series of unexplained rashes that I was told were allergic reactions were also part of this rare disease.
