Hello All,
Darry is doing great at home. It’s been almost 2 weeks since he’s been discharged from LEGACY RIO. We did a little welcome home surprised for him, when I say “we” literally just our parents, the siblings-spouses, nieces & nephew to welcome him back! We wanted to plan something, but wanted to make sure he adjusted to home life first and wait for the COVID surge to die down. He is continuing his exercises at home, and will be doing his outpatient therapies once a week. His swallowing is getting stronger, he’s trying to make more sounds from his vocal cords. It’s going to take awhile, speech therapy believes he can be more vocal by January. It can take at least 6 months or longer for vocal chords to heal after intubation & extubation, so we are all very hopeful. He’s has been trying to be more independent faster than we’re comfortable with lol. We have to tell him to slow down and be careful frequently. Can’t say we blame him, he had to lay around in a hospital bed for a whole month or so before moving on to RIO. He enjoys his freedom lol.

Again, visitors are welcomed as long as you are masked up and completely vaccinated covid/flu - the whole Shabang y’all. Please keep praying for him to have a continuous speedy recovery ❤️‍

Hello All,

As some of you may or may not know, our family has been going through a very rough time the passed 3 weeks.

On July 9th, 2021 around 1:14 AM, Darry became unresponsive after he began vomiting and collapsed back onto his bed. His girlfriend Isabella was there with him, and tried to call 911 and was answered by an automated system. She hung up and called me (Dolly), I advised her to call again and sped over to their home within 5 minutes. I started CPR when I arrived, while we waited for paramedics to arrive. I had Isabella take over chest compressions, so that I could open up Darry's mouth and airway. Paramedics and the fire department arrived 3 minutes after I did. They brought him out to the living room, and began working on him for 20 minutes or longer. They were able to transport him once they got his pulse back, and he was then transferred into the ambulance. During transport to the hospital, they lost his pulse and had worked on him until he was transferred into the ED. Once Darry was stable, one of the ED nurses came out to speak with us. She explained that Darry is very sick, and that he went into cardiac arrest and they are unsure of what caused him to go into cardiac arrest because someone at the age of 25 shouldn’t be going into cardiac arrest. There are a lot of unknowns right now, and the doctors say it may take months before we can get an answer to what caused this to happen. Please bare with us, we will try to keep you updated with his health.

We are starting this fundraiser to help pay for Darry's current and future medical expenses, and help alleviate the financial burden on my parents as they are not working. They haven’t worked since July 9th and the medical bills have already started rolling in and have been pretty high amounts.

As his older siblings, we are also doing our best to help with expenses and handling his care. Unfortunately, siblings do not qualify for FMLA, but we have been taking days off or leaving work early to be with Darry at the hospital.

Many of you have asked if you can provide any assistance to us, and I think this is one of the best ways that would definitely help our family. Our parents are very prideful and will never ask for help, but we are asking for financial assistance for Darry and for our parents.

You can also send donations via Venmo, Cash App or Zelle, if you prefer

Venmo - @DollyChao1011

Cash App - $DollyChao

Or

Zelle - (my cellphone number)

These all go directly to the account for Darry’s Recovery Fund.

We appreciate any amount that is donated, or even a simple share of our fundraiser for Darry. We will continue to keep everyone updated on Darry’s health and recovery.

Feel free to reach out to us!

- With Love,

The Songvilay Family

Update #7

9/2
Hello Everyone,

Darry's discharge date was moved to 9/3 - 11am. The speech and language therapist wanted more time to work with him on his swallowing and speech. The RIO team, and us agreed that would be beneficial for him to stay an additional 2 days. He is anxious to discharge and break free into the outside world. lol. We have been making the necessary adjustments at our parents house to accommodate Darry as he continues to recover and regain all his physical and mental functions back. We are happy to have him back home, and to be able to see him daily again.

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting Darry and us! His road to recovery is long, but he is a tough cookie and taking everything like champ. Exceeding expectations per usual. I will keep everyone updated here, and other social media platforms. Thank you again for all the love and support you have shown our family! <3

Update #6

8/27
Hello Everyone!

It’s been a little over 2 weeks since the last update, sorry about that! Darry is doing amazing and thriving in RIO. Prior to RIO, he couldn’t get up without assistance or walk without his walker to lean on and assistance. Now this kid is hopping up out of his own wheel chair taking steps and hopping into his bed. He has starting eating puréed foods, and swallowing much better. His speech therapist has been working with him on speaking and his vocal cords. She says from 1-10 on readiness he is a 7! He’s been dressing himself, brushing his hair and teeth, washing his face and more. He tried to leave by walking to the elevator and let his therapist and nurses know he was going to see his family. Lol. The intensive therapies 6-7 days a week has truly been make so much more progress! He is able to text and even FaceTime you via his phone! He even went on his Instagram, and liked a few posts!

Update #5

8/12
Hello Everyone,

Darry has finally discharged from the hospital, and he is being transferred over to an inpatient acute rehabilitation program within Legacy Health. The program will benefit his recovery, and hopefully will speed it up a bit more. He will receive therapies 7 days a week, for 3 hours total per day. He will get 24/7 nursing care, and been seen by different providers.

Unfortunately, due to the increase to COVID Delta-Variant they are not allowing visitors. Darry is only allowed the exception of a set of three people to be his support person during his stay for the program at RIO, which will be our parents and his gf Isabella. Meaning Tosan , nor myself will be able to visit him or be able to be a support person. We will be able to see him via facetime. We do not know the duration of his stay, the providers assess him every two weeks to see how he is progressing, and they will have care conferences to let us know what his care plan will be.

We are happy with his progress so far, and that he is able to get into RIO. It unfortunate that we cannot be there to support him every day like usual, but we will definitely do so via FT and see him once he is able to come home. Continue to send him positive and good vibes, keep praying for him through his recovery and keep him in your thoughts.

& thank you for all your support!

With Love,

Update #4

8/10 - Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the late updates, it has been really hectic. Darry is doing great. His NG tube was removed from his nose, and placed via his stomach. He is doing really well in physical therapy, and trying to run before he can walk fully. lol. Speech therapy has been coming 5x a week to help him learn to use his vocal chords, and swallow without assistance from anyone. We are current looking for an inpatient rehabilitation program to get him into, the intensive therapy and 24/7 care will help his recovery progress even more before he comes home to us. All and all, he is very resilient through all of this, and has even started trying to text people back on his phone. Keep sending positive vibes, and praying for his recovery. We appreciate everyone that has donated, and shared his fundly. It has been a great help towards his medical expenses. We are truly grateful to you all.

With Love,
The Songvilay Family

Update #3

8/2 - He got his IV removed, and is moving around in his bed like crazy to get comfortable, but he always ends up sleeping on his side. He’s made so much progressive in physical therapy, walking with a walker or with some assistance.

Update #1

Darry graduated out of the ICU on July 17th (yay!), and he’s transferred to the Telemetry Acute Care unit. This is so they can monitor his cardiac activity, he is making progress every day, and receives therapy 5x a week. We’re happy about his progress, and will continue to support him so he can continue to recover swiftly. Keep him in your prayers, and send some positive and motivational vibes his way! We will read him all your well wishes and motivational cheers and praises!
