Dan's Hurricane Harvey Recovery Effort

From Dan Quinn

Compelled to put past hurricane relief experience to use, I am heading to the Texas Gulf Coast to aid in initial Harvey recovery efforts. Your help is needed to reach my goal, which will supply equipment, materials, etc.

Update #9

I wanted to write a quick note and thank you all for supporting my Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts.

As many of you know, I left Chicago in mid-September and arrived at the Diocese of Beaumont Mon 9/18. The staff directed me to St Joseph’s in Port Arthur, TX, a parish in need of support. I’ve been working there and in the Port Arthur community since.

I am so Thankful, Appreciative, and Grateful for your support. Together, we laid the ground work for the parish to begin its rebuild and have been in the community mucking & gutting homes, shoring up foundations/framing and helping bring people into more safe, secure and sanitary living conditions. I say together, because it is your continued support that enables me to do this work.

I feel like we have helped uplift the spirits of many in this area as well. For me it has continued to fill me up with a sense of real purpose, and for the folks who got some support, it’s been incredibly important. We have done a lot of in Texas, and I have been asked and feel compelled to go back for another month in January.

As many of you know, I try to stretch a dollar as much as possible. I try to only spend where the best value will come back, and much of that has included materials for home rebuilds, space heaters, blankets and electric skillets for people in real need.

The next few weeks bring new challenges and opportunities. I am volunteering with several Port Arthur community groups, and we will be distributing 170 hotel rooms of furniture the weekend of Jan 12th.

If you’re looking for someplace warmer to volunteer, I could use your help!

I leave on Thursday Jan 4th to return to Port Arthur. The funds we raised before have done much good and are diminishing. There is more to do, and with your help we can continue to support some low income, highly stressed folks in Texas.

So as hard as it is, I am reaching out to you for one more contribution to go back down and finish some things that we started in these last several weeks.

I hope that you trust your money is being put to good use. I know some immediate community needs we can achieve with your help. My goal is $5,000.

My mom and dad always said “We do for the living.” You’ve helped me live into that. Thank you. I hope you have a Happy New Year. Let's hope 2018 is a great for all of us!! I am so grateful for your support as you help me on my mission in Texas!!

Sincerely,

Dan Quinn

Thank you for visiting this page …

For those of you who know me, you know that in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I spent nine months helping the people of a small Mississippi town clean up and begin to rebuild. And you know, it was one of the most meaningful times of my life.

Today, I’m preparing to take a Mission Trip to the Gulf Coast of Texas to help in a similar way. My plan is to go in phases and to connect with groups and communities along that need my unique skills and disaster relief experience.

Currently, I am looking to arrive the week of Sept 18th, three weeks after the storm, and this first trip will be solo, approximately 2 - 4 weeks.

While my overall purpose is to support hurricane victims returning to their property and homes -- particularly those who do not have the funds to help themselves, my initial focus will be debris removal, gut structures and to clear lots to prepare for placement of FEMA trailers, which seems inevitable.

Based on my Katrina experience, I know that for the next 60-120 days, the primary work will be demolition & debris removal. Rebuilding will be down the road when utility services are operational again. And this immediate stage of debris removal will help make room for more volunteers groups. Once FEMA trailers and shelters are established, bigger groups of volunteers will be greatly welcomed and needed. And, I look forward to leading many of those efforts too.

For now I am networking with our home parish (Old St Pat's), the Catholic Extension Society (a national organization committed to supporting and strengthening poor mission dioceses across the United States), and the Chicago Archdiocese to identify and coordinate with any Gulf Coast Parishes that need support. I also am in conversations with Christo Rey in Houston. I would like to find an underserved parish/community to help recover, and ultimately, that all of you can support as well.

My goal is to arrive self-sufficient for a week or two and work with the groups listed above to identify a community to support and a location from which to base more permanent operations.

In 2005, I self-funded. I'll take a different approach for this trip. I am (with significant help from Laura and my niece Molly) initiating a first-round of crowd sourced fundraising to raise operating funds to pay for equipment, tools, materials, supplies, living and travel expenses.

My goal for this first round is to raise $15,000 to help the people of south Texas begin to reestablish their lives. You can donate here on Fundly and I would be honored if you would follow me on Facebook and Instagram (danquinn.j). Also follow #djq2HarveyRecovery

In addition to funds, I welcome donations. This is a short list of some of the critical items I need. What is not donated, I will rent or purchase.

· pick-up truck with a tow package· small inexpensive travel trailer· a pressure washer· large chainsaw· small chainsaw· sawzall· tow chains, and  tow straps for debris clearing.

I'm sure there will be other tools, but this is a start.

I'm so appreciative of everyone's support and generosity. It's because of all of you that I'll be able to make a difference on the ground and all of us will make a difference in the lives of so many hurt by this hurricane.

The great theologian, Fredrick Buechner, says ‘The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.’

This quote has always spoken to me but it’s not just about one person. Your support - in terms of finances, emotional/spiritual energy, and in networking - are already fueling me, and I am beyond grateful that you’d consider this request for help.

Thank you so much,

Dan

P.S. To my Beloved friends, I think I’ll have a new SENT talk when this is over!!

P.S.S. I will be updating this page with photos from our work (with some help from a friend in Chicago), please stay tuned. And, if you’d like to receive my email/blog, which I hope to do every week or two, please send me your email and I promise to keep you updated.

Initial funds will cover:

· Tools/equipment, debris removal materials (gloves, goggles, safety shoes, etc.)· Simple room & board expenses food, water, sundry expenses· Travel expenses gas, lodging, food & miscellaneous expenses in route· $625/week salary for basic expenses such as wireless/data services, health and auto insurance, technology tools, reserves

In the event that these funds are not required or the generosity exceeds Dan's needs, any remaining funds will be dispersed to other local charities performing these same duties.

Update #8

You did it!!! Thank you.

Steve Jura's donation put us right our $15,000 goal, and then the crown behind him piled on and drove us to $15,640. There are 101 unique donations to this point and more if you consider the donations-in-kind.

Thank you for your support of this endeavor. We are working with a number of organizations in the greater Houston area to achieve maximum affect of your generosity. We currently have three (3) locations in Houston & the Diocese of Beaumont targeted for help within the next week.

We'll keep everyone apprised of our progress, especially thru the Facebook group. If you're not currently a member, please let Laura or I know.

Have a great weekend!!

The bubbly kids in the truck (Storm Trooper??) are very excited as well. I'll tell you that story later.

Update #7

From Laura:
Dan's scheduled to leave Sunday morning for South Texas. To send him off with good energy, I'm planning a little open house Friday night (pizza and beer) starting at 5 p.m. - ??

Please stop by if you have a minute to wish him luck, have a beer or just enjoy some laughs.

He'll be packing and the house is kind of a wreck, but we would love to see you. If you think you'll be here, let me know, so I can estimate pizza.

The tools & donations are piling up. This is starting to look like a thing!

Y'all have turned the corner and lead us into the homestretch. We've passed $14,500 and have the final goal insight. Thank you for your help and support, from the FB shares, to the donations, to the suggestions on how best to communicate, etc. Thank you.

I've been working to make better connections with organizations on-the-ground in Texas & will continue to follow-up. As we solidify things, I'll keep you updated.

Update #3

First-stop on the Hurricane Recovery tour!

Laura & I went over to Wolcottville, IN on Big Long Lake to pick-up our "Zombie Apocalypse" Recovery vehicle. Thanks Michael & Tracy for the donation. We'll put it to good use.

This week we'll collect some donations & load it with tools. Plans are to leave on Sunday & arrive on the Texas Gulf Coast on Monday 9/18.

Thank you for everyone's donations over the last week. I have some updating to do for offline donations, but we've crossed over the $13,500 mark on our way to $15,000. Thank you for your trust & support. I'll keep you updated.

Update #2

64 Donors & $10,196; 2/3rds of the Way to our Goal!!

I'm overwhelmed and humbled by your response, generosity and kind feedback on Facebook and notes. This cause is obviously close to our hearts, but to have your support on this "faith in action" project means everything. Thank you.

We're not quite at 5-days and at 67%, wow, wow, wow!!!

On the list of surprise donations, I got a 20' tow chain from a 75-year old grandmother who said, "I don't think I'm going to need that anymore." And thanks to a daughter-in-law who said, "I know where to send that."

I'll update the donation list and get it out tomorrow for those that like to send physical things. We unexpectedly had a generator donated. That's really going to help some folks.

Thanks everyone for your contributions large and small. $5.00 is 2-gallons of diesel, $20 is a meal or two in-transit, all are welcome. Thank you.

Update #1

We've crossed over 50%!! Thank you. I am so very grateful to friends and family who want to support this effort & people in such dire need. I should say that I'm surprised, but given the generosity that I see in you each day, I am not. I am however bumbled and grateful. I'm looking forward to the action phase of this project and getting to the Texas Gulf Coast.

46 donations and $8300 (+) !! Thank you.
