Our mission is threefold; (1) to bring sustainable, hands-on learning to children at the Phidim Village School in rural Eastern Nepal, (2) to establish a locally managed thrift shop to provide affordable clothin...
Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to our efforts we are already ten percent of the way to our online fundraising goal!
Since 2014, students from Colby-Sawyer College (CSC) in New London, NH have planned and lead three service trips to rural Nepal to bring educational opportunities and essential infrastructure like water filtration systems to underserved regions.
A largely impoverished nation, Nepal was further devastated by the massive 2015 earthquake and more recently racked by flooding in the summer of this year. While natural disasters like these are unavoidable, the key to building a stronger, more resilient Nepal is to uplift the next generation of Nepalis through education and opportunity.
Educational workshops and supplies:
We plan to bring four college students and the necessary supplies to the rural village of Phidim, in the Panchatar region of Eastern Nepal. There, at the regional public school, we will provide hands-on workshops in biology and hygiene, art, women's empowerment, and business and entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on bringing tools and curricular outlines for the continuation of our educational impact beyond the duration of our stay. Your donation will support the purchase and transport of educational supplies like a simple compound microscope, paper, and pencils.
Sustainable thrift shop venture:
Additionally, we will work with contacts in the region to establish a fully sustainable thrift store that will offer lightly used warm clothing that is affordable to members of the underprivileged Dalit class in the region. We will bring initial clothing donations to stock the store and establish donation centers in the urban Kathmandu area to sustain it going forward. Proceeds from the thrift shop will then be used to fund the transport of clothing from the donation centers to Phidim. Your donation will support transport of clothing and the construction of the thrift shop, as well as the initial wages of the shopkeepers.
Fostering cultural literacy:
A small part of our time in Nepal will be spent immersed in local culture and history through visits to important cultural sites and events. Students on the trip will also be culturally immersed as guests staying in the homes of local families while in Phidim. Finally, upon returning to the United States, we will share our experience with our college community at CSC, our local New London community, and with students at nearby secondary schools through a series of presentations and outreach events. Your donation will help supplement the students' travel expenses, making the whole experience possible.
We are dedicated to seeing this dream of ours through to reality and are deeply invested in the trip. With strong contacts in the regions of Nepal that we will be impacting, an experienced and passionate group of students, and strong local support from our college, we are confidently poised to set our project into motion. All that we need now is the catalyzing support of our community.
Thank you for considering supporting us in our endeavor!
