From Lucy Fisher

While the Covid-19 crisis is causing chaos, fear and uncertainty the world over, for small, poor rural areas like Southwest Madagascar it is having devastating effects on an already struggling population.

Imagine that during this Covid19 crisis you live in a tiny one room straw hut with your entire extended family on a small compound with 5 other large families.

Now imagine that the only way you can feed your family tonight is by going out fishing in a small canoe like boat with 4 other people, and then taking your catch to the market to sell. Your family lives hand to mouth, if you are unable to make any money that day they go hungry. On top of that your only water supply is a communal well used by hundreds of people daily.

Add to that the fact that there are no hospitals near by, and even if there were you could not afford them, nor do they have any kind of intensive care facilities.

The people living in Southwest Madagascar are already living in very basic conditions and on the brink of starvation. Children are malnourished and their growth is stunted. Add to that the Covid19 crisis and their situation becomes desperate. They have no hand sanitizer, no masks, limited water supplies and no food storage. They can not panic buy and they can not quarantine at home.

There is limited healthcare and no morgues.
