On Sept 24th I witnessed a friend sacrifice his life to protect his community and the native forest that he loved. I am reaching out for donations to help support his partner and the 2 young boys left without a father.
Fires have been raging in Cordoba Argentina for 2 months now. 95 percent of the fires are lit intentionally by land owners who profit from the protected land by burning it and then selling it for real estate and agricultutral purposes. Alongside this the province has been experiencing a severe drought with no rain in sight. The call went a month and a half ago for volunteers from the local communities to help as the local fire departments did not have the resources to fight the fires or were being held back by the bureaucratic red tape that the country is well known for.
100's of volunteers have been putting in many long days fighting the fires directly and indirectly. Most of us are inexperienced and unequipped. Many have been facing the fires head on in running shoes, jeans and a shovel but with the biggest hearts i've ever seen.
On sept 24th I was part of crew that was trapped in a fire. The winds changed direction quickly and the fire flanked us from behind. Most of us were lucky and made it out with minor injuries but Cristobal lost his life. He was out there fighting fires trying to do the right thing, trying to help the community and the rapidly disapearing native forest that is being demolished by greed.
I am asking for donations to help go towards the family of Cristobal. His wife and two young boys have been left without a father/partner. He was a stand up guy who was loved by the entire community. I will also put some of the money towards helping train and equip the volunteers who are still risking their lives at this moment in the mountains and towns fighting fires trying to protect what is left. I believe this is important because if Cristobal had the correct clothing, training then perhaps his life may have been spared. I will allocate 50 percent for Cristobal and family and the other 50 percent for the equipment and training.
Thank you everyone who can donate any small amount goes a very long way here. If you are unable to donate please take a moment to google search fires in Argentina to see what is happening here.
