Cooper Fire Fund

Cooper Fire Fund

From Mara K.

On the evening of February 3-4, 2018, my sister's home succumbed to a disastrous fire. While nobody was hurt, including her family's beloved dog, her family lost just about all of their possessions, including their home.

More Info

Among the things lost in the fire? Everything. Clothes, books, furniture, appliances, technology, toys, gifts, family heirlooms, financial stuff, personal stuff, one entire car, food, recently purchased groceries, new clothes, items that had been with each person in the house since infancy... basically, nothing was spared. While a couple of things were recovered, a second fire that hit the night of the Super Bowl made it final that nobody was going to have a chance to recover anything else. The house is now pretty much a roofless husk of what was once a lively family home. There are a couple of walls barely standing where there were once family holidays and summer celebrations that are never going to happen again, at least not in that location. The generosity of friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers cannot be understated, and the family is awestruck at the kindness that they've been shown by all in the past couple of days. There have been countless donations made of clothing, sweets, and veterinary care that have left the Cooper family unable to find the words that can express their gratitude properly. While relief is in sight, it will be a long road to recovery, and there will be some losses that can never be replaced. This is why I, Vera Cooper's sister, am asking you to please consider making a modest donation to cover some of their short-term expenses such as groceries, bureaucratic processes, day-to-day expenses, and the like.

Update #2

Moving along! I was able to send my sister the first payout from the many kind donations received from friends, family, and straight-up kind people today. She is, needless to say, still incredibly thankful to everyone for your kindness. Some groceries are to be bought today, and I'm told the family's looking forward to the future. There's a hope to put enough money together to rent another home like the one they had been renting. If you are able and willing to spread the word, please do. Many thanks from our family to yours, and I hope you get to eat a lot of pancakes today if that's your jam!

Update #1

Neat! Goal of $500 met! According to Fundly/Stripe, I'll be able to get the initial payment to my sister next week less processing fees from Fundly and Stripe, the credit card processor, and then she can start the crummy but necessary process of replacing stuff. Thank you all for your generosity of spirit and enormous kindness. It's very inspiring to see so many people ready and willing to help out people—whether they know them or not—when the unthinkable has happened. It gives cynical old me renewed hope for the intrinsic decency of the human spirit. Really.
