Computers for Casa Q

Computers for Casa Q

From David Meischen

Casa Q (here in Albuquerque) provides a home for LGBTQ teens—homeless or at risk thereof. For my 70th birthday, December 28, I’m raising money to purchase two new computers for Casa Q.

A SHOUT OUT to Eileen Rose for a generous donation! Eileen is my former student; in 1995 she served as Editor to Rampages, the literary magazine of Austin's Johnston High School. Currently an attorney, she lives in Round Top, Texas. THANKS, Eileen!

More Info

I've been volunteering at Casa Q since December 2016. In the summer of 2017, when I donated my 2009 Dell desktop computer to the Program Director and his staff, I discovered that it was the best and fastest computer in the building—the only one that could readily handle the Microsoft Office Suite I arranged for Casa Q at the discount for nonprofits. I manage a nonprofit; doing so without a reasonably fast and up-to-date computer, with adequate software, would be crippling.

GOAL # 1: Purchase a new all-in-one desktop computer for Casa Q. Estimated cost $750. Purchase maintenance coverage for this computer—so as to keep it in good running condition for three years. Estimated cost: $210.

GOAL #2: Purchase a new laptop computer for Casa Q. Estimated cost: $380. Purchase maintenance coverage for this computer—so as to keep it in good running condition for three years. Estimated cost: $170.

As soon as the donations total here makes it possible to purchase and protect a good desktop computer, I will use the funds to do that. I'll post photos, perhaps even a video, of the Program Director at his desk with the new computer. Ditto for the laptop.

Update #1

Phone call yesterday evening with the kids at Casa Q, brainstorming ideas for a Christmas Day feast. I'll arrive at 8 or 9 a.m. and put a turkey in the oven. Also on the menu: stuffing, sweet potatoes, Brussel sprouts, pozole, Waldorf salad. Definitely pumpkin pie. Not sure yet about other dishes or desserts. Being there drives home to me what an important service Casa Q performs.
