More Info

A little pond hockey goes a long way.  On Sunday, January 27th, join us for a 3 vs. 3 tournament (all skill levels welcome) at Evergreen Lake, recognized by CNN as one of the world's most beautiful ice rinks. Not sure you want to play? Check out the details below for more ways to get involved.

Colorado Cancer Shutout

Why: It's about time we play some pond hockey. So why not do it for a good cause? Tournament proceeds, shirt proceeds, and donations benefit the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, one of the best cancer centers in the world. Funds will specifically go toward esophageal cancer research and care. Learn more about esophageal cancer here.

What: 3 vs. 3 pond hockey tournament (all skill levels welcome) + open skating + t-shirts. Private warming hut will have food and drinks for attendees. Can't make it? Buy a t-shirt or donate the amount of your choice!

When: Sunday, January 27th from 12-4pm. Tournament entry will close on January 1st, but donations and shirts will be open until the day after the tournament.

Where: Evergreen Lake in Evergreen, Colorado

Shirt Details

What's the shirt about? No one can have too many hockey t-shirts, especially the Palffy family. On the front, the tournament logo is printed in white and periwinkle, the official color for esophageal cancer. The back is home to the iconic University of Michigan block M, and a call to join us in this fight against esophageal cancer. Shirts are included in the tournament entry, but are also available separately. Classic men's cut, 100% pre-shrunk cotton, Fruit of the Loom.

Skating Details

"This is hockey, OK? It's not rocket surgery." - Donnie, Mystery Alaska

Whether you've never skated, barely skated, or you're a young Stevie Y, we encourage all skill levels to join the tournament. Though there are (small) prizes involved, it will be otherwise non-competitive. If you still don't want to play, come hang out, eat some food, have a drink, and hit the extra rinks for open skate.

An entry fee is required at the Evergreen Lake house. It is $6 if you have your own skates, $9 if you need to rent (skates and entry included). Just sign up for the open skate donation option, which helps cover hut rental and includes a small donation.

Tournament Details

  • Where is it? Evergreen Lake in Evergreen, Colorado. Enter via the Lake House and they will direct you to the warming hut and rink.
  • When is it? Sunday, January 27th. First puck drops at noon so come early to get set-up, rent skates, etc.
  • How does it work? Tournament entry closes on January 7th, after which we will set up and share the tournament bracket. We are shooting for 15-minute games, no halves or subs. We will be using backstops instead of goalies (goalies-- skate out!). Teams will referee themselves-- no body checking. Winning team members will each receive a Mountainsmith Cooler Tube, an essential for both beer and pond hockey.
  • What do I need to bring? Your shirt, your skates, your stick, your helmet (hockey, bike, ski helmet all work). If you don't have skates, you can rent at the lake house ($3 fee, up to men's size 15). Don't have a stick? Torie will bring some extra righties, but consider purchasing a Sherwood wooden stick at your local shop (~$20).
  • How do I sign up? Teams will be only 3 people. If you have your team set, choose the tournament giving level and leave a note with the names of your other team members (note: can also email teammates names to If you don't have 3 people, you can still sign up solo or with a partner! Torie will match extra players and/or fill in any empty spots.
  • What will it cost? The $40 tournament fee covers private ice and hut rental, your t-shirt and t-shirt shipping, and a small donation to the U of M Rogel Cancer Center. When you arrive at the Lake House, you will be required to pay a small, additional entry fee. This is $6 if you have your own skates, $9 if you need to rent (includes skates).
  • Bad weather? As long as the rink is open, we'll play! If weather closes the Evergreen rink, players will be notified by e-mail and tournament will be rescheduled. The rink also has a hotline for weather closure details. Partial refunds available.
