CO Black Mama's Bailout Day

CO Black Mama's Bailout Day

From Tiera Brown

Around Mother’s Day, organizations and individuals in dozens of American cities will bail out as many mothers as possible, women who otherwise would spend Mother’s Day in a cage because they cannot afford bail.

Update #4

#FreeBlackMamas is an annual campaign by the National Bail Out collective that seeks to raise awareness about the human and financial costs of money bail and emphasize its impact on Black mothers and caregivers. Every year since 2017, we have coordinated tactical bailouts nationwide (across 36 cities) to free as many Black mamas and caregivers as possible so they may spend Mother’s Day with their families — where they belong. The University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Black Law Students Association and Colorado Freedom Fund led the effort here in CO.

Here are some numbers and highlights from this year's bailout:
-In Colorado, we raised $16,354 in funds to go directly to bail funds and post-release services (with an estimated net of $14,086.11 after Fundly takes their fees).
-We freed 5 mamas and/or caregivers in Denver.
-Charges ranged from park curfew violation, trespass, shoplifting, domestic violence, assault, and probation violation.
-1 caregiver was living in a sober house prior to her arrest back in November of 2018, and being held on a $500 bond. Our post-release efforts include finding housing and connecting her with drug treatment services.
-1 mother had a 9-month-old daughter and was held on a $2000 bond. Our post-release efforts include transportation to and from pre-trial/court, assisting in obtaining identification and other important documents, employment seeking assistance and more.
-A mother of three was being held on a $100 bond that she was unable to pay. She was going to plead guilty to a felony in hopes that she could get home to her children sooner because the father is at risk of being deported. Now she is able to focus on presenting a strong case with her legal counsel.
-Nationwide we raised over $1,000,000 in funds and freed over 106 mothers. A full recap can be found at www.nationalbailout.org

We are looking forward to planning a nice homecoming or appreciation dinner for the moms to let them know we support them, love them, and want to #FreeBlackMamas and #EndMoneyBail. Please stay tuned for more information about that.

Mother's Day 2019 is over, but our liberation work continues. I hope to do more especially in the areas of incarcerated parents, pre-trial detention (house arrest and ankle monitoring), as well as domestic violence, so stay tuned. Please follow Colorado Freedom Fund on Twitter (https://twitter.com/FreedomFundCO), like on Facebook (https://facebook.com/ColoradoFreedomFund/), or find us at http://www.ColoradoFreedomFund.org to support our work to end wealth based detention in Colorado and beyond.

Huge thanks to my team Elisabeth Epps, Eva Frickle, Molly Recht, Zach Warren, Becca Curry and the other attorneys who were either in the jails or helping us locate women we could assist. Also, our volunteers Omo Odia, Ashlee' Wedgeworth, Amber Mygatt, Christen Aldridge, and so many others. To each and every one of you who shared a post or donated.

THANK YOU, from the very bottom of my heart. I cannot say this enough.

-Tiera Brown, University of Denver, Black Law Students Association Vice President

Update #3

We've reached $14,000 in funds to free black mamas! We are so grateful for everyone's support and wanted to provide you with a few updates:
1. Due to restrictions/limitations with the fundraising platform, 75% of the fund available to bond mamas won't be released until next week starting May 13th!
2. Due to this, we are extending the bailouts another week. We will, however, end the fundraiser on Mother's Day like we initially planned for.
3. We posted bond yesterday and we'll be posting some more bond today for some more mothers.
