Almost two decades ago, my mother and father realized we had lost sight of the real meaning of the Christmas Season. To remedy this, they did what many families do and adopted a family in need.  However, instead of just buying some gifts and delivering them to a collection center we took it one step further.  On Christmas Morning 1994, Mom, Dad, and I delivered furniture, clothes, blankets, and other household items to a very surprised, yet grateful family. Immediately, we knew this was going to be our tradition.

That “hands on” tradition continues today.  Rather than delivering items to homes on Christmas morning, we take deserving mothers shopping just prior to Christmas.  The mothers are identified by the Ministry of Caring Child Care centers and we match them with “shoppers” recruited through our network of friends and family.

My father, Clif, lost his battle lung cancer in 2006. One of the many ways Mom and I honored his memory and charitable spirit was to create the “Clif Abel Children’s Fund” within the Ministry of Caring. The establishment of the Fund allowed us to raise money from a wider variety of sources (including local businesses), provide our donors with 100% tax deductible receipts for their donations, and formalize the program within the Ministry of Caring.

2011 Donation Letter

Hello friends, I hope you are preparing for the approaching Holidays with joyous anticipation.  As you know, the Holidays are a special time for my family. Mom and I have worked hard to carry on the legacy of compassion and service that meant so much to my father. For almost 2 decades we have worked with families in need, brought to us by the Ministry of Caring, to ease the burden of poverty during the Holiday Season. Over the last 14 years, the Clif Abel Children’s Fund has taken over 350 families shopping around Christmas.

While the world remains a uncertain place, there is one thing we know for sure - more and more people continue to struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families.  Will you join us and make a difference this year?

Donations can be made to the “Clif Abel Children’s Fund” at the Ministry of Caring – 119 Carpenters Row, Wilmington, DE 19807. Or, via the secure web site right here at Fundly.  Donations are 100% tax deductable.

For every $200 donated, we are able to take one family shopping. For every family we bring shopping we need 1-2 “volunteer shoppers”. Our volunteer shoppers guide the mother through the store, help locate sizes and bargains, keep tabs on the spending, and most of all make a connection. If you are interested in shopping please e-mail me at  Shopping dates will be determined shortly.

Please feel free to forward this e-mail and our story to as many friends, family, co-workers, and business owners as you can. Remember, we need shoppers as much as we need donors – this is a great way to get involved this Holiday season. Likewise, if you have someone on your shopping list and just can’t find the right gift – sponsor a family in his or her name. Get your co-workers together and sponsor a family. Make one of our shopping trips a team outing. Tell your customers and clients what you are doing this season and ask if they will join you! There is no limit to how you can get involved! Will you make a difference this year?
