CicloSDias - Open City Streets For People And Transform San Diego

CicloSDias will open 5.2 miles of streets, car-free, in the heart of San Diego to pedestrians, cyclists, families, and anyone who can imagine a new way to use them.

This is an opportunity for neighbors and community members to come together and enjoy open, car-free streets on Sunday, August 11th. This event helps bring about a clean, healthy and vibrant San Diego.

YOUR SUPPORT

We are asking you to invest in San Diego with your donation to help launch CicloSDias - San Diego’s first ever open streets community-wide event.

The CicloSDias Steering Committee is seeking to raise the funds necessary to cover all event-related expenses, including traffic re-routing and control, police, and emergency medical services. Other expenses include our outreach efforts which will ensure that neighborhood residents and businesses along the route are made aware of the recreational opportunities and health benefits associated with CicloSDias. The outreach effort in under-served, low-income communities is especially critical for the success of CicloSDias. The total estimated budget for CicloSDias is $100,000.

In order to supplement existing contributions and event sponsorships, the CicloSDias Steering Committee is tasked with crowd-funding $15,000 from the public (that’s YOU!) for event expenses.

Approximately 5.2 miles of city streets will be opened to families, pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, skateboarders, and anyone else interested in enjoying this unique public space. We need to raise $3,000 for each mile of the CicloSDias route -- that's $15,000!

HISTORY

CicloSDias is modeled after the very successful Ciclova's events that started in Bogota, Colombia over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. These ‘open street’ events happen throughout Latin America and the United States, including New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles…and NOW San Diego!

As of 2012, some 80 Open Streets initiatives are held regularly in North America.  CicloSDias is all about connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic.

BENEFITS

* CicloSDias encourages free physical activity, promotes health and allows participants to reimagine their communities as places to walk and bike for transportation.

* CicloSDias will improve the environment and air quality of San Diego by removing cars from the road.

* CicloSDias provides a novel type of public space that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to meet and make social connections, thereby allowing individuals, community organizations, and civic leaders to build relationships.

* CicloSDias will bring thousands of people to support local businesses and fuel San Diego’s economy.
