The Cheryl Kay Foundation is a family organization, united by the desire to honor Cheryl’s life and memory, with the call to serve the underprivileged senior community and women fighting breast cancer.  We are kicking off our first fundraising campaign focused primarily on "Friends and Family" of Cheryl.  Your help in this undertaking is sincerely appreciated.

In 2011, Cheryl Kay Stawovy was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and received a grim prognosis for survival. Despite chemo and radiation treatment, Cheryl smiled in the face of adversity, seized every opportunity to “live”, and guided her family as they traversed her cancer journey.   As the cancer slowly impacted her life, Cheryl provided a shining example of “how to live” for her extended family. She was a bright light in a dark situation.   In spite of her health-conscious lifestyle and relative youth, Cheryl passed away in January 2013 at the age of 52, 14 months following diagnosis.  She left behind three beautiful children (ages 21, 20, 15) and a loving husband.

To honor her memory and help the family heal, her sister, brothers, and husband created the Cheryl Kay Foundation with the mission of being a solution to a problem facing many whose Cheryl's business strove to serve, while honoring her tenacious battle with breast cancer.  Cheryl Kay Stawovy is the inspiration for our organization.  In all of our efforts, we strive to reflect her spirit.

The foundation provides grants to licensed non medical home care agencies to help senior citizens live and age with dignity in their own homes. By funding care to those who are ineligible for government assistance or unable to afford care on their own, the Cheryl Kay Foundation will help seniors age in place longer than they would without outside assistance. Our organization intends to show, through data collection, that small interventions in Activities of Daily Living will extend independent living and thereby prolong entry into nursing homes and entitlement programs. Moreover, we believe these small interventions will impact hospital 30 day readmission rates. The ability to show measurable outcomes from care intervention will be critical to building awareness around our cause and scaling our organization as a credible “force for good.”

Striving to connect Cheryl in all of our philanthropic endeavors, in addition to the aforementioned services, the Cheryl Kay Foundation provides home care services for individuals who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The similarities between the care needs of an individual undergoing breast cancer treatment and the elderly are striking. As breast cancer patients struggle with the detrimental health effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, basic acts such as meal preparation and housekeeping become extremely challenging. Helping breast cancer patients heal comfortably at home by providing simple assistance is another way we keep Cheryl at the “heart” of our organization.

The Cheryl Kay Foundation is a tax exempt organization under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  All donations are tax exempt as of July 22, 2013.
