Chemo Care Kits

Chemo Care Kits

From Zoe Ramia

I am raising money to make chemo care kits for breast cancer patients in the area. They will include items that helped get my mom through treatment and remind patients that they are not alone!

Update #2

I dropped off the chemo care kits with the oncology office on Friday. The nurses were so excited to start giving them out to patients. Thank you so much to everyone for your donations, we all made a small difference in the life of someone going through chemo!

More Info

My name is Zoe Ramia and I am graduating from Clemson this December. As I gear up and get ready to graduate and figure out what's next (hopefully medical school), I am faced with the question: why medicine? This has been tough to put into words (I mean really tough- my personal statement is still blank), but I keep coming back to what I have experienced in life that has sparked my interest. If you know me, you probably know that my mom is a two-time breast cancer survivor. The first time I was too little to understand what was happening, but the second time I was in seventh grade and had questions of my own- what was happening? Why was it happening? What could we do? Would she be ok? We are so very fortunate that the answer to that last question was yes. While my mom was going through chemo, she received a gift bag from one of her friends with a few items to help get her through it- it had gum, a magazine, lemon drops and a few more things. As a senior in high school, my sister replicated the sentiment and made chemo care kits for patients of my moms oncologist. Two years later, I set out with a goal to make 30 chemo care kits and was overwhelmed by the support from my community and was able to make 100.

Almost four years later, I still remember the thank you cards I received from patients who got one of my bags. I want to make more so that patients who are going into chemo for the first time know they have people in the community rooting for them. In these kits I want to include gum and mints for the bad taste chemo puts in your mouth, coloring books and colored pencils so they have something to do during treatment, hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes so that even with a compromised immune system they can feel safe if they go out, lotion, lip balm, tissues, scarves, and a personal note. That is where the donations come in- everything that I receive will be used to buy supplies for the kits! Please consider donating so that I can help give these patients a little bit of comfort and support during such a hard time, any bit helps.

In the pictures you will see me and my sister with my mom after she completed a 3-day breast cancer walk, me outside of the oncology office with one of my bags, and both my Grandmas, my mom's friend JoAnna, and my mom with all of our completed kits in Spring 2016.
