Administered through Empowerment Squared, the Chanan Singh Sandhu Memorial Scholarship will support the dream of post-secondary education for newcomer youth in Hamilton.
While the last year has given us plenty of reasons to celebrate, we also experienced the loss of Chanan Sandhu, Tej’s grandfather, whom both the beer Chanan and MERIT itself is named after.
The impact Chanan had on the world is of incredible measure. He lived his life with love, selflessness, and generosity at the forefront of everything he did. He put everything into his business, Merit Furniture, knowing that it could be a conduit for helping over 1000 people from his village in India create a better life in Canada. Along with his wife, Charn, he housed, clothed, fed, and employed many of them, making sure that they got off to a good start once they arrived.
As a small way of continuing Chanan’s legacy, MERIT Brewing is proud to announce that we will be donating 100% of the proceeds from Chanan draft sales during our anniversary month to establish the Chanan Singh Sandhu Scholarship. This award will be administered through Empowerment Squared, an incredible organization in Hamilton that is dedicated to empowering newcomers. We hope that this scholarship will help someone get off to a good start in Hamilton and support their pursuit of higher education. We look forward to working with Empowerment Squared to further the dreams of some amazing youth in our community.
Thank you, Chanan for the heart and soul you led your family and business with, and for inspiring so much of what we do at MERIT Brewing. Thank you, Hamilton for your support in helping us continue the work we are inspired to do in our community. We look forward to raising a glass of Chanan with you.
