Louisville’s “little swim program that could” began in April 2018 when a handful of volunteer Masters swimmers used a grant from the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation to teach free swim lessons to adults at Central High School and Mary T. Meagher pools. In the first month alone, instructors transformed 40 true, and often fearful, beginners into proud, confident swimmers-- many of whom have turned to swimming as a lifelong fitness activity.

Words fail to express the swelling sense of pride and accomplishment a beginning swimmer experiences when they discover what their body is capable of in the water. More to the point, nothing compares to the electrifying feeling that envelopes a pool deck when Masters swimmers, who by most accounts have always known and loved the water, guide students through the beautiful transformation from fearful and helpless to confident and empowered.

To say the response from our program has been overwhelming is an understatement. Every new swimmer told a friend, who told another friend, and so on and so forth. Within a week of the first graduation, we had hundreds of prospective students knocking on our door. We were floored.

Fast forward one year and we’ve now taught more than 200 adults to love and feel safe around the water and formed a nonprofit to finance and administrate programming.

The mission of Central Adult Learn-to-Swim, Inc. is to teach as many Louisville-area adults to swim as possible by providing low or no cost access to Adult Learn-to-Swim and adult aquatic fitness programming and contributions to this fundraiser will do just that. We believe every adult should at a minimum know how to be safe and comfortable in the water and at a maximum learn to swim and utilize swimming as a lifetime fitness activity.

With a waiting list of well over 300 people, we still have a lot of work to do. We are hopeful our community will continue to rise to the occasion and support us as we help our community one beginning swimmer at a time. If y’all means all, then all y’all can swim, too!
