Update #4

I want to thank everyone who has contributed and supported us through this time. I has been a rollercoaster ride the last two weeks.

Cathy finished her last radiation treatment today! 28 sessions. Now is the time to let her body heal!

I have tried to re-direct my emotions to something positive. In the past week or so I started designing tee shirts. Some of the designs you see here. It is just another way we are working to get back to business, take this journey and transform the pain into something good. All of you who have supported us will be receiving a tee shirt! Part of the money we are trying to raise is to purchase a direct to garment printer, used is around $5K to $7K, so we can print tee shirts individually, without holding extensive inventory.

Cathy is a special needs workshop teacher, educating students from 6 years old to 21. One of our goals is to start a service company that employs these special people, to create, and work at their own business. Cathy teaches them, printing, computer graphic design, floral arrangement, cooking... the list goes on. Once they graduate, many do not continue that creativity.

Please spread the word!

Peace

January 15, 2014

Some of you have seen Cathy and myself at different farmers markets or different shows and events over the past year. The past 4 years have been difficult especially when you're starting your own business. Cathy and I were finally starting to get together; we were spending time together, relaxing, going out and meeting people; meeting you at the farmers markets and finally connecting.

Then this year on May 19th 2014 Cathy was diagnosed with breast cancer.  We weren't sure how bad things were. You’re going through tests and everything, you go into a whole different realm of life, you get thrown to this area where, as Cathy says “All I want to do is get it out of me.” We were trying to see how bad it was, going to the doctors and tests.  We had to make some choices in our lives. During this time, I was doing farmers market with her and basically to make a long story short I had to stop doing the business and concentrate on getting our family better and well, specifically Cathy, and supporting her and everything that was going on. and over these past... seems like forever... months, you learn a lot about life and what's going on around you and what matters.

Cathy had her surgery on her throat to remove her thyroid and also a double mastectomy August 1. The tumor was 4 cm and also spread to 1 lymph nod.   It was not the way we wanted to plan our summer. Then going into scheduled chemo’s and when you start talking to people you start realizing how bad it really is. You start telling people that you know “Cathy was diagnosed with cancer.” and that person says “Oh my son has it” or “My mother-in-law just went through it”. Unfortunately cancer is the thing that is tying us together, and it should not be. Then you start hearing words like “Thank God she got it now instead of 20 years ago, and we start listening to those words and its like... this is not right. Yes there are more treatments now compared to then... but there's an issue here.

We have a small company, a really small company that I started five years ago because I grew too many vegetables in my garden, and then started making pickles and salsa. It’s called Crazy Steve’s. Once we got closer to surgery I couldn't do any shows or farmers markets and stuff like that. We had done it one particular which I was invited to this year, the Lower East Side Pickle Day Festival. The only Jersey boy gets invited to for this. I wanted to come out with a line of flavored popcorn. So we have our Peace, Love and Pickles flavored popcorn which I was giving out to people as samples in . People were like “When are you getting this into Whole Foods?” We are approved for our pickles and salsa with the Whole Foods Stores.

Life is a balance, it’s a harmony. Cathy was only to have four chemo treatments, and then it became six, then you start looking into more and more “What's going on here? Why are these things happening?” You start seeing things more when you start looking into the reality. I started to realize that it is not what it should be.

We have a choice. We can treat cancer or we can stop cancer, and I think we need to just stop cancer. Cancer is a product of our environment and what's been going on for the past 50 years. How do we stop it?  All these things are going on in my mind. First and foremost you want to help the person who is hurting. That is what I have to do. Then you go online and you see all the other people that are hurting right there along too. We have to make a choice how do we fix this? Part of it is how we take care of ourselves with nutrition and all, that we have to be educated. We thought things were OK and they are not.

One of the things I started learning about more is GMO’s, pesticides, herbicides, all the things we think are okay but they’re really not, and are cancer causing agents. And we’re OK with this and that’s not right.

I am logging in to put this plea up on the internet and I see all the people that are out there that need help because of cancer treatments, because of disorders in their bodies. I want to help them all.  I want to help Cathy. Part of it is we need to educate ourselves.  We don’t know, we don’t understand.

We have to make a choice in the way we eat.

I decided that we have to take our product and make it a voice for the people. And I have to do it first through a bag of popcorn. It is the most basic snack food. Six different flavors of popcorn, which is our “Popcorn with a Purpose”. The main thing is we have to do is stand up as a company and put out there what is healthy foods, so we don't have cancer. So we're not spending money taking care of treatments.  So we have to be an advocate for clean water and clean air, however for bad it is. I want to help.

We've been struggling. We have been struggling for the past five years, and now we are struggling even more. Thank God Cathy had insurance to take care of this stuff. There are people who don’t. Or because of their medical conditions, they have to fill out all these forms and stuff. At the same time, everything else that goes along with this wears on your body and your family life style and the money that has to go out.

We need your help. I can't do it alone, I don't want to do it alone. I want your help we need to stick together and do this right. We need to make things right. We need to eat healthy, we need to educate, we need to inspire people and we need to contribute back to life. It was what I put on my first jar of pickles when I started this 5 years ago, and I believe it now. I want to do things right for the world. I want your help. I want to do it together.

If you could help out, that would be terrific. We need to get the product out there, we need to talk to people. You know how I am, what I do at farmers markets and talk to people. I am passionate. I want to put a team together and do this right.

If you could afford a bag of popcorn, donate. Help us out, because you're helping your brother, your sister, your wife.  The people who are not listed up on that internet screen yet, you're helping those people out.  We need to stop this. I look forward to the day that you and I get to meet, and I get to shake your hand and say “Thank you. Thank you for believing.”

Thank you. God Bless. Peace.

Update #3

This is LOVE...plain and simple. This is LOVE.

Friends who haven’t been in contact in over 33 years. People who we work with. Connections that we make in school, our child’s school, or just at the supermarket. Chileheads that know one another from their crazy endorphin community of capsaicin. Total strangers, email contacts, social media connections and more.

This is LOVE.

To step up, to not be complacent, to listen, to feel, to understand. To make it your own, to believe and want to get involved.... however you can.

This is LOVE.

And this is what we saw this week.

Thank you.

Thank you for the donations that have come in. Thank you to those who made a sacrifice. Thank you to those who have supported our popcorn. Thank you to those who watched and listened. Thank you to those who shared our message. Thank you to those who took it on their own to speak, talk, call, video, podcast, a message of their own, on a website, blog, Facebook, Tweet. Thank you to those understood...because you are related. Related unfortunately through cancer.

It has to end.....and I know we can do it.....together. Not treatment...end cancer.

You have all now become part of the solution to end cancer. Thank you.

I am serious.

Pat yourselves on the back. You deserve it.

Update #2

Just got some terrific news! Last week, before I ran up to New Hampshire to be part of a walk with Lawrence Lessig and the NH Rebellion, (I will post about this tomorrow), I ran down to Baltimore Maryland to drop off samples of our product to Avenue Gourmet, a distributor that delivers to the entire Mid Atlantic region of Whole Foods. They were to present our pickles and salsa to the regional buyer to be considered to be part of the entire Mid-Atlantic Region, cut into the shelves of over 39 Whole Food Stores from KY to VA, NJ, MD, PA and DC!
I received an email today that stated "We have selected from this Round 5 LOCAL NJ VENDOR- CRAZY STEVES to be the product we will put for vote for our New Item Committee (NIC) group."
If accepted, this would be our first step in getting our concoctions to you with a national chain like Whole Foods.
This is the main thing, WE NOW Get to talk to people about our "One Jar, One Meal, One Solution" campaign. For each jar that you purchase YOU ARE GIVING a meal to someone local to you. We are just the instrument.
I have tears running down my face. Somewhere, things seem to be coming together. It has and continues to be a challenge. But I would not do it any other way!
It is just a step...and I get that.
This is where we need to stay together, and more than ever I need your help. I want to do this for US!
If you're reading this, pass it along. Your belief in us and spreading the crazy ideas mean more than $$.
I want to thank everyone so far that is involved, and those that are about to come on board. Thank you!
I also want to thank those that have not come on board, but took time to read this and the posts before and after this one. Please do this, just follow. That's all.
Peace to all!

Update #1

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime: build a community of fishermen and you feed the world.

It is the 3rd day of our plea. I want to thank all of you who have reached out with support, a kind word, letting us know we are not alone. Please pass on our message to all that you know. As Cathy has said on occasion, sometimes we have to put the oxygen mask on ourselves before we can help others who need it.

The money that we raise will be a start for us to get back on our feet. What we are struggling with and have struggled with in the past makes us empathetic to some of the struggles people around this country are dealing... and not dealing with. Heating the whole house, not just two rooms, having proper food to eat, making sure you have enough gas to get home. Even though these are comforts, I think we believe that it is better to focus on where we want to go, not just where we are at.

To get back our business, so we can generate income for ourselves, and then for others as well. To give life to this cause once again, so we can change the world, one jar of pickles or bag of popcorn at a time. I know it will happen. Thank you for being a part of it.

Let us together be a community of fishermen and women, that we can feed the world with food, thought, and spirit. Peace.
