Carter's Passion Project: Bringing a Little Free Library to The Compass School

From Shannon Cooney Wilcox

I am raising money to purchase, build and install an official Little Free Library on my school's campus in order to give all students in grades K-8 free access to books so that I can share my passion for reading.

Dear family, friends and neighbors,

As most of you know I am a third grade student at The Compass School. During this time of distance learning I am taking on the challenge of a passion project. A passion project is an optional project that  involves something that you enjoy or inspires you and in this case, turns that passion into a way to help others. One of my passions is reading. I consider myself a lover of books. I am lucky to have a very large book collection but I know that it isn’t the case for everyone. I wanted to figure out a way to give more kids easy access to books, especially now while many libraries are closed because of the coronavirus.

My passion project is going to be building and installing an official Little Free Library for the entire Compass School community to use and enjoy. A Little Free Library is a weatherproof outdoor box, similar to a mailbox, where people can borrow and exchange books. I will serve as the steward of the  Little Free Library until I graduate from Compass and then I will pass the role along to one of my younger brothers or to another student willing to take over the job of managing it.I'm seeking donations to help raise the money to buy the kit of materials needed to build the library. The total cost of the Little Free Library kit to build and install including the box and post is approximately $500.00. The kit I have chosen is eco friendly and made out of recycled milk jugs which fits with part of The Compass School’s mission of environmental sustainability.  My goal is to raise the funds and build the kit over the summer and install the Little Free Library on campus by the beginning of 2020-2021 school year. I thank you for taking the time to read about my project and for any support you are able to give.

Sincerely,

Carter Wilcox
