This is what happened to Jaime
A couple of weeks ago Jaime had an accident. Hanging out with friends, she took a dive into shallow water and broke her neck. Specifically her C5 vertebrae. With the remarkable help of friends close by, she was held steady in the water until paramedics arrived. Her surgeon that night explained that the front part of that vertebrae was crushed and fragments were pressing against the spinal cord, which was the reason she was unable to move the lower half of her body, and had only limited use of the upper half. He and his staff performed an absolute miracle that night with surgery. The next morning she had a little movement in her right leg, foot and toes. Jaime's a fighter. Wife, mother of two, very athletic and headstrong. The doctor saw her progress and was confident enough to perform the second surgery to the backside of that same vertebrae just a few days later. She's been recovering since then, every day looking for very small gains. We're currently awaiting to be transported to a top-notch rehab facility, where she will stay and fight this battle to regain all her functions again.
This is Jaime's current condition:
Currently, she can move her shoulders, arms, elbows, and wrist. Very little use of her fingers, so she can't grip things yet. She'll be in a brace/collar for a few more weeks as her neck muscles strengthen. She can move her right leg, foot and wiggle those toes, but can't actually lift that leg yet. Her left leg is being stubborn, no movement yet. She does have sensation all over, which is a great sign. The doctors are "cautiously optimistic" that she can recover fully. With spinal cord injuries, there are really no rules to go by. This outcome will be based squarely on Jaime's body and mind and her work in rehab. But she's young, healthy and has never backed down from a fight in her life, and this will be no different. We've been overwhelmed with the well wishes, prayers, and support from everyone. We'll never be able to thank you all fully, but Jaime promises she will make it all worth it.
