If you feel lead to help, your contributions will help support long-term care requirements for Dad to create a space that functionally supports his new needs from his Spinal Cord injury.
On the morning of Thursday, June 18th our Dad said bye to our Mom as he headed out of their home for a 20+ mile bicycle ride. Something that he has done a hundred times. Dad is active, healthy and loves cycling. He has been cycling for years now - it gives him a sense of joy, peace, and energy.
Around 11:30am, Dad hit a piece of gravel/soft spot in the road that caused him to lose control of his bike. This unimaginable accident left Dad with a catastrophic Spinal cord injury located at C3-C5. Due to the location and severity of his injury, Dad has paralysis in his arms, hands, stomach and legs (essentially all functionality, feeling, and movement below his chest line).
He was airlifted to a trauma unit at Atlanta Medical Center (AMC). On Friday evening, Dad had surgery through the back of his neck to stabilize his spine and to help promote healing. He remains at AMC in the care of ICU and his Spinal surgeon until we can stabilize his breathing and stomach. Dad is currently still on a ventilator and they have inserted a picc line to provide him with nutrition. Once he is more stable, the goal is to transfer him to the Shepherd Center, ranked in the top 10 for rehabilitation centers for Spinal cord injuries in the Country, where he will begin his journey of rehab and equip him (and our family) to adjust to living with his injury.
So many have reached out and have asked for specific ways to help. We are grateful for so much love - the continued prayers mean the world to us. If you feel lead to help in any way, we will try to update the "Ways to Help section" with specific needs as we continue to learn what is ahead of us. We are beginning the journey to understand long-term care requirements for Dad to create a space that functionally supports his new needs (full wheel chair access and more), as well as a place they feel cared for. Any donation or contribution will support creating this for Dad and Mom.
With love, Ashley & Kristy
