Update #9

Hi
Just a short update to let you all know that I extended my fundraising until September and raised my goal to 30 K. Just recently I had to go to the emergency ward because my doctor did a sonogram of my leg and found a large blood clot. I didn’t know this but the doctor at the ER told me that cancer increases the risk for blood clots and the medicine I am on also increases the risk. So ain’t that a bummer. I am now on Xarelto along with half of the American population.

Update #8

In my last post I mentioned that I was on a plant based diet and there was a very good blog about that subject that my friend Deby Jizi writes. However I spelled her last name wrong and want to correct it. You can find Deby's blog at Debyjizi.com. She also has a very inexpensive book that you can order that helps you transition to a plant based diet. It is called the Whole Food Plant Based Mindset. The more I read about how a plant based diet can prevent heart disease, cancer and a whole host of illnesses, the more I want to make this information known so those I know will not end up as I have. I am hoping that this Diet might mitigate some of the damage I have done. Stay tuned I will let you know.

Update #7

Hello everyone! It has been a while since I have written an update on my condition so I thought I would let you know what I have been up to. Well health wise I am status quo however I have been fighting bronchitis for almost two months with 3 sets of steroids, 2 antibiotics and using a nebulizer ( for those who don’t know a nebulizer is a machine that converts liquid medicine like Albuterol to a mist that you breathe in). So I am finally over it and just in time for spring in Southern North Carolina. My azalea bushes are now in bloom and we have had some very warm days. On April 5th I go to Duke Medical and get my every three months bone and CAT Scan done. I am hoping it will be a good report. One major change for me is that three weeks ago I went on a whole plant diet. Actually it’s a lifestyle. No animal products, no fish, no eggs,, no processed food and no oil. It has opened up a whole new world for me. DebyJizi is a friend of mine down here who told me to watch Forks over Knives a documentary about the myths that the dairy and meat industries perpetuate even though they are killing us. I highly recommend it. If your interested Deby has a great blog debyjize.com. I am hoping that this dietary change will help to slow the cancer down. I will let you all know after April 9th. As you can see my fundraising has come to a stop. Apparently Linked In didn’t like me giving my information to my own contacts. They kicked me off the site and if it wear’t for a former student Who works at Linked In., I would still be persona non grata. But he pulled a few strings and I am back on the site. If any of you have any ideas about how I might do some more fundraising I would love to hear it. I don’t want to do Facebook for personal reasons pertaining to my family. If any of you want to send my information to your co-workers and talk me up a bit that would be welcome or any other ideas you might have..
Mere words cannot adequately describe my gratitude for your generous contributions. I am doing more fundraising because if I have to go on IBRANCEi. It is a very expensive drug so I have to be prepared when that happens. I hope you are all doing good and I still read your loving e-mailson Linked In whenever I get down. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need help for anything I could supply. I will look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest wishes,
Deborah

Update #6

Hi everyone. Just wanted to give you an update and ask you all a question about Linked IN.
So far I am doing pretty good but have come down with bronchitis and it is being treated with a really strong antibiotic and steroids. When one has cancer immunity to other things can weaken. So in the winter I try not to get around too many people which can be a little lonely but gives me a great deal of time to read and write.
For some reason Linked IN has temporarily restricted my account. There is positively no way to contact then by phone. Believe me I spent three hours trying to, If any of you knows someone who works at Linked In please write me at deborahkatiehiggins@gmail.com. I don't want to lose any of my contacts and I enjoy watching how you all keep moving up in your careers so if there is a problem I want to rectify it as soon as possible.
I can't stop writing this update without expressing how grateful I am for your support. I hope you are well and having a good year.
Warmest wishes
Deborah

Update #5

Hi everyone. I do hope you had wonderful holidays and are looking forward to an even better 2019! Wow 2019! And next year 2020 sounds like the title to a science fiction movie !
I believe 2019 will be a good year for me since it started out with the results of my bone scan and Cat Scan that showed the cancer had not shown any major progression in my bones except a small lesion on my cervical spine.

. The great news for me was that there was no cancer in any of my organs which means for now at least, no need to go on the chemo pill IBrance. However, thanks to all of you when I do have to go on the Ibrance, I will have money for those co-pays and will hopefully not have to worry at first, about economic considerations.
Words are inadequate to describe just what your well wishing and financial support has meant to me. When I first started the campaign I thought “well if I get some response that would be good” but didn’t expect, and am so grateful, for the generous outpouring of support you have shown me!

So what is next? I will continue to put a stop to eating any sugar or “white” foods such as pasta, bread, and rice. Studies have shown that this type of food feeds cancer cells and I want to starve them! Also a New Year resolution to walk more which my doctor encourages and increase the time spent meditating and reading scripture especially healing scripture.

Although I am out of the woods for the next three months I will need to take bone and Cat scans and see my oncologist at Duke Cancer Center in April and will hopefully get the same results.then. I will definitely keep you appraised of my condition. My prayers are full of gratitude for each of you and how special you are and have made me feel. I want you to know that it works both ways if there is ever anything or any advice you need about your career or your life I am always available for you. Thank you again for all your support my warmest wishes,
Deborah

Update #4

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays! I thought I would update you about the next thing I need to do regarding the cancer diagnosis. On December 28 I must take a bone scan and a CAT Scan to make sure that the cancer has not
spread. I have to go through this every three months and I must say it is a bit harrowing waiting three days
for the results but I will update you all on Janiuary 5th after I see my oncologist. I am hoping for a good report but prayers are always welcome.

I am just amazed at the generosity of you all and your kindness has affected me and lifted my spirits more then I can ever express! You have more than reached my goal and since the journey may be long I have had to up the goal so those who have not contributed will not be discouraged from helping. I have already paid several doctors and hospital bills so I thank you again so very much. I look forward to giving you some good news in January and I wish all of you a very happy, productive and goal achieving New Year!!
Much love to you all,
Deborah

Update #2

I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving even if it is not a holiday you celebrate. I am very Thankful this Thanksgiving Holiday for the warm wishes and generous donations that the JHUISI Alumni have showered me with.

Health wise this is a break for me from tests. My next CAT SCAN is the first week in January where I find out if the cancer has stayed put or it has spread. So every three months when I get the scan I hold my breath for two days waiting for the results. It is my “new normal”

I thank you again and again for your concern and caring. I wish you and all your families a wonderful holiday.

Update #1

I want to sincerely thank everyone. Your monetary support for paying bills incurred from Cancer treatment comes as a Godsend for what is facing me. But what is even more heartening is the kind and caring messages I have received. Fighting Cacer as you probably know has a psychological aspect to it and the more positive I can remain the better the outcome. So I truly appreciate your positivity and offers of help. I am getting close to my goal. I didn’t’t know what to put as my goal since I don’t know what lies for me down the road. I have heard horror stories of how expensive it is so I may move my goal higher but that is not for those of you who have given so generously already but for those who may want to contribute in the months ahead. Again. Thank you and I will keep you posted about my journey.
