Can Pamelor Be Used to Calm Anxiety?

More Info

Pamelor is a medication typically prescribed to treat depression, and it has FDA approval for this mental health condition. Beyond that, a doctor may use Pamelor medication off-label to treat anxiety disorder, stress, and chronic pain.

Pamelor for Anxiety Efficacy

Pamelor medication is occasionally prescribed to treat anxiety when the first-line medications caused many severe side effects or were not effective. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that is known to elevate mood and provide relief for accompanying symptoms of depression among which is anxiety.

The mechanism of action how Pamelor calms anxiety is not clearly understood, however, it is believed to affect neurotransmitters in the brain which then relieve anxiety, tension, and excessive worry.

The brand name for Pamelor is Nortriptyline. It is most well-studied on efficacy and tolerability in patients with depression and anxiety disorders. It was compared to Fluoxetine, Sertraline, and has been found responding in depressive patients older 60, those who had anxiety resulting from chronic pulmonary disease as well as those who underwent recovery treatment after a stroke.

Pamelor for anxiety is not commonly prescribed medication in patients younger 24, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning. It may increase the probability of suicidal ideation. For this age group, other modalities may be safely prescribed or a doctor may use it if benefits prevail risks.

Beyond that, a doctor may combine the use of Pamelor together with psychotherapy to achieve the highest therapeutic effect. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR may be effective in treatment-resistant depressive subjects who have an accompanying symptom of anxiety.

Pamelor medication is not prescribed in pregnant and nursing mothers. In pregnant, it may cause malformations and abnormalities of the fetus, while in nursing mothers there is no data about its excretion into milk, so it may be dangerous as well. Other modalities may be prescribed to calm anxiety in these groups.

To safely take Pamelor for anxiety, a doctor should priorly learn the patient’s medical history to exclude the possibility of interactions. The most dangerous interaction include MAOIs. They should be stopped 2 weeks before initiating treatment with this antidepressant as well as the patient should not take Pamelor 2 weeks after discounting the treatment with MAOIs.

If you decide that treatment with this tricyclic antidepressant may be for you, you must speak with a doctor. Your medical history should be closely studied prior to assigning a treatment plan and administering medication.
