Camp Sharon & Karen is an MFA project, creating an adult summer camp event for parents of transgender and gender non-conforming people, offering these parents space to learn and grow in support of their kids.
My name is Zach and I'm an MFA student, studying Design for Social Innovation at School of Visual Arts in New York City. My thesis project is a participatory event, creating space for parents who continue to struggle with their own biases and expectations while parenting a trans or gender non-conforming kid.
Camp Sharon & Karen is a new creative concept, offering space for parents of trans and gender non-conforming kids to learn and grow through play, discovery, and community in the judgment-free setting of summer camp. At camp, parents will participate in activities that facilitate the exploration of their own experience of their kids' transition in search of new ways to demonstrate support.
As a grad student, my employment options are extremely limited and the budget for this event is currently coming out of pocket. I am looking for support in offering this event free of charge to the parents who have asked to participate.
Please join me in support these parents' efforts to work on themselves in hopes of improving the lives of their trans and gender non-conforming kids. The funds raised here will contribute to space rental and supplying materials for our summer camp like art supplies, food, and the production of camp handbooks as a take-home resource for parents when they leave camp.
