Update #5

Dear supporters of the Buy a rock, build a classroom, It is time to say goodbye. We have almost reached our Fundly deadline and are very proud of the first building activities at school. Four walls are waiting to be attached to a roof, four walls are waiting to welcome our students, once finished, into a proper classroom. We can't wait to celebrate the opening of the new building in the future. Ofcourse we could have never started building without all your generous donations and will continue to raise fundings for our future classroom. With every goodbye there is always a new beginning. We like to welcome all donors to continue following our story. You can read all about our school on our Facebookpage: Creative Education Foundation Zanzibar, or follow us on Instagram for daily updates on Zanzibari schoollife. Don't be a stranger and let's stay part of our team. For now we are sending out a big thank you, to all of you. Asante sana you made the start of a change in the world of our students!

Rocks for a classroom?

Imagine being born in paradise; a tropical island surrounded by the clear blue Indian Ocean, where palmtrees sway gently in the wind and fresh coconut water is the local drink. Sounds like heaven? Not if you are born into poverty or left without parents to look after you, to comfort you and provide a safe haven and nourish you into a healthy, strong, confident child.

This is just what Judi Palmer encountered in picture perfect Zanzibar, when she came face-to-face with the other side of paradise. Many orphaned children, left to relatives who, in their turn, are struggling in their efforts to manage big families, not always able to feed yet another child. Local education is unable to give these children the leg up they need to succeed in life and many are malnourished and coping with learning difficulties.

In 2012 Judi decided to reach out and help these children and provide them with the same opportunities each innocent child on this planet deserves. She wanted to give them a future, the best possible chance, a quality education, so they too can grow into knowledgeable young people with the potential of making a huge social impact on their communities in the future.

How? By starting the Creative Education Foundation on a donated property. It is here the children learn to farm, raise chickens and bees and enjoy a loving learning enviroment based on Rudolf Steiner philosophies, incorporated into the local Zanzibari education curriculum.

What started out with helping a small group of children, transformed into a primary school providing quality education to over 70 students, who live in poverty. Equipping them with knowledge and skills for a succesful and productive life, developing their full potential. Empowering them to become agents of change in the future.

This growth is encouraging, but also means more classrooms are needed. In 2018 a volunteer organisation, named Spreading Grace, build the school a beautiful treehouse. This outdoor classroom is an idyllic enviroment in good weather, but with rainy season fast approaching the open treehouse is unfit for lessons. We have the children wearing raincoats but a few torrential showers have already left the treehouse as well as the children soaked and running for shelter. Let's get these kids into a proper classroom and back to using the treehouse for fair weather fun.

This is where you come in! We need to raise US $15000 to build a new classroom and would like to start straight away, before the real rain arrives. Become a gamechanger and help us transform lives and build this classroom.

How? Easy, you just buy a load of coral rocks. Coral rock is the sustainable building method used on this island for building. Whether you buy one rock, a pot of paint, a bag of cement or part of the palm leaves roof. You are welcome to contribute as much as you like! With each coral rock, we are one step closer to our goal and you can be part of this!

Together we can build this classroom. All donations will go directly to the materials and workmen building the classroom. There are no overheads! Regular updates and photos will be posted on Fundly and if you have any questions, we are here to answer them all. You can even call or message directly with our founder, Judi Palmer on: 00255 777 492 183 and ask her anything about the project.

Buy your coral rock today or buy them as a special gift. For every 20 rocks we sell to one person, the children will make a colorful nameplate to be put on our wall of fame! Share our project with as many friends, family members and collegues. With your help, we can give the children of Zanzibar the education they deserve.

Asante sana, thank you very much for caring, hartelijk bedankt, dankesehr, merci beaucoup, muchas gracias, obrigado, shukran, grazie mille

Update #4

Keep those rocks rolling!
Today we can show you the walls of our new classroom. At least, these are the walls up to window height. We have reached our current building budget, the 30% we raised so far, and have 37 days left to continue our fundraise. If only 350 people around the world would donate 30 Dollars each, we can finish this building! I believe in magic and people willing to group together. Let's give a big shoutout for your sportsteam, local school or shopkeepers association and finish our classroom together!
