Update #2

Hey there! To update everyone, the launch amount has been reduced to $3,000 to specifically focus on opening our IRS approved account. We'll be supported by a fiscal sponsor that requires a deposit to open the IRS approved account. Once we have the account, we'll then be able to reach our future goals by accepting donations with a 501(C)(3) tax exempt status and begin focusing on supporting our Zimbabwean partners! Thanks so much to those who have already donated, shown support and given encouragement!

About Bulawayo Community Builders

Bulawayo Community Builders is an initiative that recognizes and makes donations to local community organizations meeting a variety of needs in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Many community members in Bulawayo face challenges such as:

  • High rates of unemployment and low access to job opportunities and sustainable income due to economic downturn
  • Inconsistent access to running water and/or electricity in the city’s residential areas
  • High risk of food insecurity and/or poverty
  • Low access to quality healthcare

These issues existed before COVID-19 but have become more threatening for some due to the ongoing lockdowns. In spite of this, there are dedicated community based organizations and nonprofits in the city that are helping people overcome these challenges.

As can be imagined, it’s critical that these organizations receive significant support in order to maintain operations and continue meeting the needs of their community.

However, many of the organizations are under-resourced and may not be able to secure sustainable sources of funding. This can be due to a lack of available financial support from local donors, or an overflow of the ongoing economic challenges experienced by the Country of Zimbabwe at large.

This is why Bulawayo Community Builders exists to assist in fundraising efforts and making donations to help a variety of organizations continue making impacts like:

  • Providing job skills and small agricultural business training
  • Helping individuals through income generation, micro-business training and entrepreneurship training
  • Providing food supply services
  • Helping families have easier access to water and solar power
  • Facilitating access to healthcare and medical support
  • Advocating for gender equality and civil participation
  • And more as necessary

90% of funds raised in this campaign will be directly donated to this season’s partnering organization. 10% of the funds will be used to cover administrative fees.

The project includes two components:

  • Providing weekly volunteer hours - the project’s founder volunteers at the partnering organization each week. These volunteer hours allow the founder to build an understanding of the organization’s work and the community being served, and to build working relationships with the organization’s staff and leaders.

  • Making a seasonal donation - During the season, the founder raises funds to supplement the personal donation she has committed to giving the organization. 90% of funds raised are donated directly to the partnering organization. Partnering organizations can use these funds to improve their internal capacity, make administrative or process improvements, enhance building and equipment needs, or other necessary expenses.

To ensure the project is conducted successfully and ethically, BCB is developing a 3 person Advisory Board that will provide expert guidance and support for the project founder and volunteers.

*Please note that donations are not currently tax deductible for U.S. based donors until the project receives the final tax-exempt status from the IRS in the U.S.

Message From The Founder

Bulawayo Community Builders is an idea I've brainstormed since 2019, and I'm now taking the leap to put this into action. Over the last few years, I've embarked on a journey of self-discovery and have explored ways to learn about and support Black progress in Africa as well. Zimbabwe was the first African country I was able to visit in 2017.

That initial exposure deeply impacted me, and changed my perspective on how I want to spend the rest of my time on this Earth. That visit, personal friendships, research, and a subsequent visit to South Africa in 2019, inspired me to connect with the continent of Africa in a way that is sustainable and meaningful beyond occasional vacations.

Bulawayo Community Builders is an extension of the work I’ve been fortunate to do in the U.S. I have two degrees in Business Management, a background in Grants Management, and a developing business in Grant Writing. Through those experiences, I learned the value of nonprofit work and how critical it is to support community-based nonprofits, especially those founded and managed by Black and indigenous people.

This is why I started Bulawayo Community Builders to support the critical work being done by community-based organizations in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. I'm so excited for this journey, and invite you to join in this work with me by learning more about the project and supporting our partners!

I'm so excited about all that will happen with BCB! I've already began developing contact and relationships with local nonprofit leaders in Bulawayo and have been getting great feedback about how we can partner with them!! Let's do this!
