We are going to live out Acts 2:44-45 by sharing a little of what we have to bless a needy family. Our efforts will not build a complete house, but it will provide them with their own, rent free living space.
We want to give you an opportunity to use a little of your resources to make a huge difference in the lives of a poor Javanese family. During the holidays several ministries “sell” things like chickens and goats for poor families. That is cool, but we want to aim for something bigger. We want to give you a chance to build a house!
Our house helper of almost 6 years has a gritty testimony. She grew up in the majority religion here and married a nominal Catholic man. Because of her low education house work was one of the only jobs availale to her. While working for some believing single gals she was exposed to the gospel and began to read the Bible. She came to faith and her life has become harder. Her two older boys, were angry with her for changing religions. They are still the majority religion. Her two younger daughters attend the Christian school that supports our visa, but the older of the two still learning what it means to follow Jesus, often making selfish, destructive decisions. Her husband will go to church with her, but he does not yet have a clear grasp of the gospel. In the midst of all this she sincerely loves the Lord and prays for her family to be inified in faith.
This dear family of 6, all on various faith journeys that we have been praying will lead to Jesus, has been bouncing around from rental to rental, dreaming of owning a home one day and being freed from the endless cycle of scraping enough money together each year to pay for ever increasing rent. Two years ago they took advantage of an opportunity to acquire some land. Now, as they sacrifice to pay for the land, all they need to do is build, but it seems hopelessly out of their reach.
This is where you come in. I long to see believers living selflessly with their worldly things in a way that blesses others. Acts 2:44-45 says, “All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.”
Wouldn’t that be beautiful if that actually happened today?
No needy believers.
This idea is echoed again in Acts 4:32, “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.” I’m not asking you to share everything you have, just $100. As you consider the variety of things you will spend money on these holidays, would you consider building a home of a family in need?
Rise up, O church, and live Acts 2:44-45!
