The story of this family is quite remarkable. Though they had no formal education themselves, the parents, and particularly the mother, were determined to have their children educated. With enormous sacrifice, the family overcame unsurmountable obstacles along the way to educate all the children. The education of these children, and particularly the girls, now stands as an afront to the Taliban. Today, Adela and Basir are college students in the US and Nadira and Rahila are completing high school in US boarding schools Many of us, around the world, have been inspired by the children taking full advantage of the opportunities and the parents sacrifice to create them.
With the quickly changing situation in Afghanistan, the family who has touched us all now needs our help. It will be essential to support these extraordinary siblings to find a permanent way to remain in the US and to help them be reunited with their parents and younger brother. The takeover of Kabul by the Taliban on August 15 robbed this family of their last hopes for returning to their country. No amount of resiliency can restore peace in their hearts until the whole family is together.
The money will be used first to help the family members working to leave Afghanistan with costs of relocation, legally and living expenses. Then we will work with lawyers to create trust funds to help the siblings in their long term goal and needs including their educational expenses, legal fees, and continued support as they reinvent their plans to reunite as a family and create a life outside of Afghanistan.
