More Info

notSteven worked all his life and he held his job for 30 years, only missing one day of work. The company made changes that moved Steven to Indiana. Dedicated to his work, he made the move.

Several years after leaving his family in New England Steven suffered a couple of mini strokes while he was at work. Unfortunately, his employer determined that he was a risk to the company and decided to let him go – giving him one-year of severance pay.  Steven had all his benefits through work, including medical, and struggled finding new employment.

During his job search Steven suffered a brain hemorrhage while home alone – he was found 6 hours later on his floor.  The brain hemorrhage also caused Steven to have a stroke and become completely paralyzed on the left side of his body.

This has significantly affected his speech and also left him incontinent – needing 24/7 care at a nursing home. Steven was married at the time, but his partner gave up supporting him and left Steven at the nursing home without any warning or explanation.

Steven has been struggling, alone, half-paralyzed at a nursing home in Indiana – miles away from his extended family for 8 months.  He’s now suffering with severe depression at the sheer sense of hopelessness.  Meanwhile his sisters Tammy and Gina had pulled together money to visit Steven from New Hampshire and to help get his affairs in order in September.

While they were visiting, Steven choked on a piece of food that almost killed him. The nursing home staff did not follow proper protocol to treat choking and Steven ended up at the emergency room and had to spend 4 days at the hospital.  He had aspirated and drew fluid into his lungs from the improper treatment. He quickly contracted pneumonia from the aspiration and was set back months on his speech therapy.

After the trauma of the situation, and lack of confidence in the facility, Gina and Tammy researched alternative local nursing homes and took as many tours as they could. They found an alternative facility for him to call his temporary home – focusing on keeping him comfortable and continuing physical and speech therapy for the short term. The ultimate goal being bringing him home to a local nursing facility in New Hampshire.

In the meantime, Steven’s family are doing everything they can to get him home. Unfortunately, due to legal issues with his partner, funding, transportation costs, and extremely long waits at nursing homes in New Hampshire -  we are looking at well over a year before Steven can return to his family.

We are asking for help to get Steven home – any funds donated will be used to cover the expensive costs of transportation for a partially paralyzed person from Indiana to New Hampshire and toward the out-of-pocket costs of the nursing facility he would attend when finally moved back to New Hampshire. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated by Steven and his entire extended family during these difficult and trying times.
