ELDER CALL TO ACTION: Kappa Chapter of Zeta Psi

ELDER CALL TO ACTION: Kappa Chapter of Zeta Psi

From Matt Horvitz

Over the past year, we have overcome existential challenges -- and persevered. Now, on the verge of repopulating the chapter house at 80 P-Row, the elder organization needs additional funds to get us past the goal line.

Brothers,

Your outpouring of support and assistance in our time of greatest need has been inspiring. The Board is happy to report that we met the fundraising goal and will be able to devote the needed resources to complete work and repopulate the chapter house.

The Board is excited about the future and we will continue to update you on our progress, as well as planned events to strengthen the chapter and our shared bonds as fellow elders and brothers.

The state of the brotherhood is strong. But the elder organization needs a short-term capital infusion to repopulate 80 Professors Row.

We are happy to report that the Kappa Chapter of Zeta Psi has survived yet another existential threat. With the support of the university, the national organization and committed brothers, the number of undergraduate brothers at Tufts has been increasing and recruiting is strong.

More importantly, after numerous setbacks and anti-fraternity societal headwinds, we are on the verge of repopulating the chapter house. This is the good news.

The bad news is that the elder organization has expended all its cash reserves over the past year. In early 2018, the university suspended the Kappa Chapter, which cut off the elder organization’s primary source of revenue (rent). Our initial fundraiser, led by former president Byron Crowe, raised enough revenue to avoid losing the chapter house and keep it in habitable condition. Since then, we have remained current on property taxes, utilities, and made required repairs and maintenance on a skeleton budget.

Now, we need additional funds because the university delayed the undergraduates from returning to the chapter house. Initially, we expected them to return in the fall of 2018. However, that return was delayed by over a year. The university approved undergraduate brothers to reside in the chapter house for this coming semester.

Our initial fundraiser was not intended to cover costs and expenses beyond 2018, but we have been able to stretch the organization's resources. Creativity has its limits and we need additional funds to make it into the upcoming semester. These funds will be used for property taxes, our lodging license renewal, and any required repairs. After covering these costs, any remaining funds will be used for improvements to the house (e.g. refinishing floors, updating bathroom fixtures and remodeling common spaces and individual rooms).

We need your donation. If you have any questions, contact Matt Horvitz, the elder organization’s current president, at mhorvitz+zetapsi@gmail.com.

We are not a 501(c)(3), and donations are not tax deductible.

Update #2

Brothers - We are falling short at the time of our greatest need.

First, the Board conveys a huge “thank you” and appreciation for all who donated already. Without your donations, we wouldn’t have come this far. But obstacles remain.

Now, we have largely cosmetic work to complete for the House to pass inspection. These items were unexpected and unanticipated by our contractor. We need to complete them this weekend.

This is an urgent request — we need to raise the remaining amount of this campaign by Sunday. Please dig deep and spread the word. Every dollar counts.

Update #1

On behalf of the elder corporation's board, thank you for all of the donations and support over the past week.

We've hit 10% of the fundraising goal -- let's keep up the momentum and increase participation. Please reach out to fellow brothers and "encourage" them to donate.

I'm also happy to discuss the status of the chapter and house with each of you individually, just contact me directly at mhorvitz+zetapsi@gmail.com.

in TKPhi,
Matt "Arty" Horvitz
