On April 10, 2018 my husband, Robert ‘T’ Trent went into cardiac arrest in a grocery store, which led to irreversible brain damage. My family and I continue to feel the heartache and heaviness of the situation.

More Info

I've had so many people reach out to me about my husband, Robert 'T' Trent since his cardiac arrest on April 10, 2018. I thank you for your concern and apologize if I have have been less than responsive, it's been a very traumatic year.

T collapsed in a local grocery store, near our house in San Diego, from heart arrhythmias (a malfunction of the heart's electrical system). Fortunately a nurse was shopping and began CPR on him until the ambulance came, however his brain was deprived of oxygen for several minutes until the emergency team arrived.

They used electric shock paddles twice to bring T back to life and shortly afterwards I received a call from the Hospital telling me that my husband was going to ICU to be put on Life Support. He was then induced into a hypothermic coma for 8 days to minimize swelling and prevent further damage to his brain, while being given very heavy drugs like Fentynol.

When it was time to bring him back to consciousness we didn't know what his condition would be... our family sat vigil waiting and praying for his return.  It took him 3 days to wake up... and when he finally did, he was transferred to another acute floor for two more weeks where he received care to help regain his ability to speak, walk, eat and use the restroom.

Following a heart defibrillator surgery, he began making some improvements and he was transferred to a Nursing Rehab Facility for an additional six weeks. He knew his family and friends but his recollection was very limited regarding basic information, such as his phone number and home address.

The facility released him in July and he's been home with us now for two months. We're grateful to have him back home, however he continues to suffer from severe memory loss and has limited capacity in regards to executive functions.

Sadly, he's also been battling metastatic prostate cancer, something that he doesn't recall that he was diagnosed with earlier this year. We continue to hope and pray for improvements, however, neurologists tell us that this may be as good as it gets.

I am now T's main care giver and we are spending much of our time driving to and from weekly doctor appointments. It's been a very rough year on the family. My husband has not been able to maintain his finances, bills and payments since his heart event and brain trauma. He is no longer able to participate in managing his responsibilities. He can't even manage a telephone or recall who he has outstanding balances due to.

The situation has us in financial peril and I am reaching out to the community to request support. Whatever donation you may be able to make to help us settle T's financial responsibilities will be great appreciated. I have hesitated to start a funding campaign, however, the situation is unyielding.

On behalf of T, thank you very much,

Jamie Trent
