Update #2

We’ve hit 40% of the goal! Wooooo!!! Again a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me through this time :)

I have a few more updates I’d like to share!

With the money raised so far, I was able to get my most urgent dental care looked after and lift the hold on my class registration. So I’m all registered for school this fall semester, which also allows for my OSAP to be processed on time for tuition payment. This and the dental work are both huuuuge weights off my chest.

In light of everything, I’ve needed to spend time with my family in Alberta where I have reliable housing for August. The plane ticket was definitely an unexpected cost but extremely necessary for my mental health and luckily my food is covered where I am. Even though I ultimately needed to be staying with family members at this time, I really appreciate that a few folks reached out to me and offered me a place to stay with open arms.

Now I am all set to be heading back to Ottawa in September and am currently looking for rentals with access to my university/work. Right now my priority will be covering the deposit on a place. Because time to find a place is dwindling so quickly, and Fundly’s processing time is soooo long (about a week), I would really appreciate it if anyone who’d like to donate could send me an e-transfer or PayPal if possible - rather than going through Fundly. I update the Fundly donations count with every e-transfer or PayPal I receive to ensure that there’s full transparency regardless of how money is sent. I know places to live get swooped up really fast and I’d hate to be left with no options because of processing times!

Again, here is the living document which contains all the receipts relevant to this fundraiser:

More Info

My name is Jade and I use they/them pronouns. I’m a light skin, Black trans person currently living on the Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

I’m currently dealing with a crisis involving houselessness, family transphobia/homophobia, sexual violence, mental illness, anti-Blackness, etc.; a bunch of really pressing and life long issues. I know that list sounds really intense, but that is exactly what it is. I really need support at this time as I have exhausted all the resources I could find.

Unfortunately, given the nature of the situation and the way that my story interacts with many other survivors’ stories, I’m unable to provide extensive details about my situation to the public. I’m hoping that people who know me and the social justice work I do in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and the Black community can feel secure in my character and vouch for my honesty. Although I can’t provide a super detailed narrative at this time I CAN provide receipts for transparency throughout this process.

I have had to leave my clothes, furniture, and all my belongings behind and currently only have two outfits and the tech I need to continue my part time job. In my previous years I have accessed battered women’s shelters but given the risk of covid and the rampant transphobia that comes along with those spaces I no longer feel I can do that. The money I hope to raise from this will go towards:

- $1400 securing safer housing (first and last month's rent)

- $200 travel to a safer city (moving fees/train ticket to Ottawa)

- $2285 emergency dental treatment

- $500 basic food and necessities

- $3750 for debt that is making this situation 10x harder (outstanding bills from trying to survive the pandemic, i.e utilities, food, rent that have been impossible for me to pay out of pocket)

- $1600 for uni fees. Due to my family's social class (poor), that I have a registered permanent disability, and that I am filed under the "family breakdown" section of OSAP I would typically have my tuition fully covered. However, there was something that went awry with my OSAP the last semester I was in school. Due to complications with my disability at that time I couldn't contest the issue. I now owe Carleton University $1600 and cannot register for my courses until I pay that. Even though I've been on the honour roll every year and have an 11.2/12.0 GPA I can't register for my courses.

I have called my school's Financial Aid, OSAP office, and everyone I could to resolve this now that I am able but basically what I'm being told is that I can't get any bursaries unless I am enrolled in courses. Which is a catch 22 because I can't enrol in any courses until I can pay the $1600...

$936 fundly fees. Fundly charges a pretty hefty platform fee (4.9%) and credit card processing fee (2.9%). This works out to being 7.8% of the 12000 raised, so $936. $12000(0.078) = $936

All of that added up brings me to $10,671. So if I manage to raise the 12000 with all of your help I will have about $1400 left for a financial safety net. I'm sure you can understand how important it is to have some spare money while in a crisis, and moving for unexpected costs and security!

I will provide any receipts I possibly can throughout this process so that I can do my best to maintain transparency! My ultimate goal right now is just to be able to go back to university in the fall and live in a safe environment where I can continue to learn and grow and support my family.

If you'd prefer:

E-transfer: jadepetgravecayley@gmail.com

I'll update the Fundly goal with any paypals/e-transfer I get, pls use "mutual aid" or something like that in the description just so I know! Also pls lemme know if you’d like to remain anonymous, or if not, what your preferred name is so I can get it right!

Update #1

Don't know where to start so I’ll just start by saying THANK YOU. I really appreciate that folks have been so supportive of me these past few days. Your kind messages, sharing of resources, funds and energy thus far is SO appreciated.

I have a few updates I’d like to share!

In 24 hrs I hit 10% of my goal. I was able to schedule two dentist appointments - one on the following day and the other one for this Monday. It’s such a relief to be able to access the dental care I need.

Here’s a google doc where I’ll put any documents relevant to this fundraiser for transparency:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sK-0RBe_zMahqbnG4Ve9AIbLHs7Bf5XIwdUnopxgXnQ/edit?usp=sharing

I understand that fundraising isn’t just an overnight thing so I’ve thought really hard about what’s most important for me to get done first. As you’ll see in the doc, this is the chronological lay out of how I’m going to be using any funds I raise.

1. Dental
2. School
3. Housing
4. Debt

Another thing is that I was able to get a couple bags of my belongings today and I’ll hopefully be getting more of it in the next few days. I’m just taking it one step at a time. For now, I have my roller skates and teddy bear so I am much happier:^))

Again, thank you so much to every single person who has reached out to me. I wasn’t expecting so much support and I wanna apologize for my delayed responses!

Lastly, I want to ask that you all
*please* continue to share as much as you can so I can register for school and truly get to where I need to be. Thank you SO much once again - I’ll check in as regularly with updates as I can! <3
