My name is Deon Harrell. I am an English Learner Teacher at Renaissance West STEAM Academy, a high need (Title 1) K-8 public school. All 120 of my students are immigrants or children of immigrants who speak little to no English. To better serve our Spanish speaking community I must raise $3000 to attend a 6 week intense language immersion program in South America. I will gain authentic Spanish fluency via living with a local family and alongside native citizens. Curriculum will include small group lessons focusing on social justice, history, politics, and exploring the rich culture of the host city in person.
All my students come from economically disadvantaged families, and many enroll with little to no literacy skills in Spanish. When speaking with one of our immigrant families, I learned that their daughter did not attend school and did not have access to technology before immigrating to the US. She has trouble using translation devices. She is learning English with no literacy background since she cannot read or write in Spanish. She is developing gradually, but she could make greater gains if I could verbally communicate with her in Spanish.
