Support the Bekauri family

Support the Bekauri family

From Cynthia Williams

The Bekauri family suffered the devastating loss of 23 year old Garsevan Luka Bekauri while hiking in the Adirondack Mountains on July 1, 2019. We hope to help them with their substantial funeral and memorial expenses.

Update #9

While the campaign ended a few months ago, I thought everyone might be interested in reading what the Bekauri family posted in The Finger Lakes Times as they contemplated February 26, 2020--what would have been Garsevan's 24th birthday. I encourage you to continue to reach out with your support in whatever ways you are able.

Dear Geneva (and those beyond):

We write as a family that has lost its core, its very center, the joyful axis about which we all turned. Our beloved Garsevan fell to his death last July while climbing in the Adirondack Mountains. We were prompted to express our gratitude by the approach of what would have been his 24th birthday.

We are sorry for the long delay. We have not known where or how to begin to convey our thankfulness to those who have lifted us up with their love and support during the darkest days of our grief.

Thank you for being present at events during which we honored our beloved son and brother. Thank you for taking the time to stand with us in our sorrow.

We struggle for the strength and will to keep going. It is hard to move into a future without our precious son and brother.

But we are finding strength, and moving into this uncharted territory. We are blessed by our family — we strive to take joy in each other’s lives, and find comfort in one another’s smiles and voices.

Thank you for your incredible kindness. We would not be here today without it.

PS — We want to clarify that Garsevan did not die taking a selfie. He had no smartphone. He had a digital 35mm SLR camera with him when he fell. We have some amazing pictures — they bring us joy, and they break our hearts.

The Bekauri Family

Zaza, Janell, Mariami, Giorgi, Tamari and Beka

Update #8

Thank you so much for your generosity, your outpouring of love, and your support for the Bekauris. This campaign has now officially ended, but I hope you will continue to reach out to them in the days and weeks ahead as they continue in a future without Garsevan. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or ideas about further ways to support this wonderful family. Cynthia

Update #6

A reminder that the campaign ends in 5 days--on November 15th. Please take this time to contact friends who might want to add their support, and help us end this campaign with a strong finish.

Even though the campaign is ending, the support will not! Every act of kindness is appreciated.

Update #5

Hello everyone,
As per the wishes of the Bekauris the campaign will end in two weeks, on November 15, 2019. They are immensely grateful for the support so far but are concerned about imposing on their friends by continuing the campaign.
Could we please redouble our efforts to end on a strong note? Could we reach 100 donations, and $10,000?

Update #4

Thank you so much for your generous donations to date--it has already made a difference to the Bekauris who are facing so many funeral related expenses. We are about 1/3 of the way to our goal and would appreciate your continued support--please share this campaign with friends, on social media, and help get the word out.

We would like to raise $5,000 for a headstone for Garsevan. The Geneva Monument Company has quoted us a price of $5,000 for the granite carving the Bekauris hope to install.

We would like to raise $3,000 for Zaza to fly to Georgia and be with his family there, to mourn Garsevan and to celebrate his life in the Georgian tradition.

As always, the Bekauris appreciate your support in all ways--your calls, visits, meals, cards, texts have helped them through the first 3 months. Please join me in helping share the financial costs of this tragedy.

Update #3

Hello everyone, please continue to share this campaign on your social media sites, through email, and by personal invitation. We got off to a great start, but we are far from our goal and haven't attracted any new supporters in the past week. What we've done so far has been so helpful--please help us support the Bekauri family.

Update #2

We are so grateful to those of you who have donated, shared the campaign, and/or offered support to the Bekauris. Every donation makes a difference, and the more widely we share, the better outreach we will have. The Bekauris are hoping to raise money for a headstone for Garsevan--your donations will help in that project, as well as assisting them in covering the huge expenses already incurred.
