Update #6

We are going to go line by line and discuss each thing that we want to accomplish with this fundraiser! We will start with SF Pride 2019 (Bi+ Community Contingent fees, A/V equipment, float-building materials) $500+

We want to raise proper funds to not only have the bi community be represented in SF Pride, but also have money to create a float, have matching t-shirts (like the last couple years), create materials to hand out all year! Let's make it a moving celebration of Bi/Pan community all the way down market. Join us in celebrating Bi+ identity by donating just $25-$50!

More Info

The Bay Area Bisexual Network is the oldest bi+ org in the Bay Area. BABN is fundraising for operating costs including a mailbox and space rental, stipends and networking expenses. Our last try at crowdfunding reached hundreds and allowed us to begin many new projects that we would like to continue into the next year and beyond. BABN's Board and our leadership committee are raising funds to cover upcoming expenses for 2019:

  • SF Pride 2019 (Bi+ Community Contingent fees, A/V equipment, float-building materials) $500+
  • Oakland Pride 2019 (booth fees) $500+
  • Various Outreach Events (Castro Street Fair, Folsom, etc…) $250+ per booth• Supporting a Bi+ Conference in the Bay Area in October 2019 $500+ (this is only partial funding as we will be just one of many partners supporting the conference)
  • Monthly Socials at the SF LGBT Center $500 space rental
  • Supporting the BiBQ and other Bi+ events in the Bay Area $500
  • Monthly Support Group at the SF LGBT Center $500 rental
  • Funding for a grant writer to work on fundraising $1000
  • Travel stipends for speakers $250
  • Mailbox rental $100/yr
  • Stipends for facilitators, table wranglers, speaker's bureau participants, and talent at socials $25-$50/per
  • Other organizing and networking expenses

We appreciate the opportunity for financial assistance which will be helpful and amazing most especially coming from the Bay Area bisexual community and our allies!

About: Based in San Francisco, the Bay Area Bisexual Network has served the bay area community for over 30 years. Founded in 1987, our mission is to develop a healthy, vibrant, multicultural bi+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area and to promote A better understanding of bi+ lives and issues within the larger LGBTQ community and the public.

BABN  Board Members include: Faith Cheltenham (East Bay), Juba Kalamka (East Bay), Martin Rawlings-Fein (SF), and THE BABN Leadership Committee members include Moria Merriweather (South Bay), Allegra Hirschman (SF), Jen Davidson (SF) and Lani Ka’ahumanu (North Bay).

History: BABN helped fill the vacuum left by the closing of the Bisexual Center in the mid 80s. Local activists, including Ann Justi and Dr. Maggi Rubenstein, attended the East Coast Bisexual Network Conference in 1987. Inspired by what she saw, Justi decided the Bay Area needed a similar network, and began organizing. Well into the 90s BABN coordinated a speaker's bureau, a newsletter, retreats, and monthly cultural and educational forums. BABN's phone line offered one of very few ways for isolated bisexuals to find and connect with bi community. In the new century – we reach over 4000 people through our email lists, our online presence and our Facebook Chat group.  We support an informal speaker's bureau, monthly Brunches for the Bi and Trans Communities, monthly Bi+ Drop-In Support Groups, an informational web site, and email lists for event announcements and discussion of regional bi+ issues.

Help us to continue to cultivate a sense of bisexual pride and visibility for the bay area bi+ community with consistent programing and events!

Thank you for your consideration.

Update #5

A big thank you to our amazing volunteer Jen D. for her support of our campaign for operating funds. As many of you know, LGBTQIA funds rarely go to bi+ organizations, Domestic funding for bisexuals dropped to $300 in 201 (yes, that is nationwide). The dramatic drop reveals how few funders explicitly support bisexual issues. Assist us in hiring a grant writer to change that trend! Your donation will go to support grant writing, our 501(c)3 status, our support of SFBiCON, our monthly socials at the SF LGBT Center (Fourth Thursdays), and furthering our supporting the BiBQ, South Bay Bi+ groups, Bi+ visibility and other Bi+ events in the Bay Area.

[Image Description: White woman sitting in chair in strange way with her feet up in the air and leaning back too far for stabilization. Three white boxes surround her with a sentence in each: bisexual culture is not being able to sit in chairs correctly without looking like you're giving birth. why can't bisexuals sit normally why are we all like this. that whole thing about bis not being able to sit in chairs properly is embarrassingly true.]

Update #4

Hello all! What did you do this weekend? Well we started a new event at the LGBT Center called the Bi+fabulous Mixer!

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bifabulous-mixer-tickets-56073941669

Are you ready to get together and have discussions, goof off and enjoy the bi+fabulousness of fellow bi/pan/queer/no-labels folks. We are duplicating our wildly successful Collaboration with the Center for Sex and Culture to bring you the Bi+fabulous Mixer as a monthly event!

Update #3

Thank you to our new anon donor who brought us closer to our $5000 goal. As many of you know, our group has for the past several months been working with the Center for Sex and Culture to bring social space to the bi+ community. We are now using the SF LGBT Center for the same social space on the 4th Thursday of the month going forward. It would be great if we could continue our partnership with the CSC, but their space was lost in the new year. Help us continue our fight to find spaces and places that help raise our bivisibility and bi/pan pride!

Update #2

Thank you to Marsha Lanier for your $50 donation! We are off you a good start on our way to $5000, we have 99 more donations of $50 to go to meet our deadline of the end of next month, and every donation will help sustain the bi/pan community in the SF Bay Area for the coming year.

The last time we asked for money an astonishing number of donors flocked to our side and donated gifts from their hearts. Let's build on our last campaign which brought us our SF Pride contingent, our bi+ drop in discussion group at the SF LGBT Center, our socials at the Center for Sex and Culture, our support of the BiBQ in Dolores Park, and to bring more events where we can get to know each other and truly continue to cultivate a sense of bisexual pride and visibility for the bay area bi+ community.

We have been working in conjunction with other organizers in the bay area to bring SFBiCON to the SF LGBT Center on October 12th, 2019. This event will be a bi/pan conference and party for anyone attracted to more - or less - than a single gender. A convergence open to anyone who’s ever wondered if they were queer enough to belong in queer spaces and too queer for straight ones. It should be an awesome day long event end capped with multiple opportunities to break bread with our full LGBTQ community, including happy hours and brunches.

All of this was made possible by individual donors from our last fundraising call in early 2018. We appreciate the opportunity to do the work in the Bay Area bisexual+/pan community with our supporters behind us!

With appreciation,
Martin

Update #1

Our campaign to build on our successes in the Bay Area Bisexual Network has launched! Please spend the next month spreading the word and stop a while to donate. One thing that you should know before donating is that there are not one but two spots to put your zip code, one under your address, the other next to the CC number. Thank you to the folks who saw this and commented.
