Basketball Court

Basketball Court

From Sharon Zook

I’m raising money to rebuild the basketball court at my neighborhood playground in the city of Lebanon. The playground is not owned by the city, but by a neighborhood association established in 1927.

The South Sixth Street Playground is located in a medium to densely populated residential area of the city of Lebanon. Funds will be used to rebuild the deteriorated basketball court for low income kids living walking distance from the court. Over half of the kids qualify for free or reduced lunch, so low socio-economic status in the general population. In many cases, parents work in lower wage or part time jobs. The playground serves as a gathering place for families, a shady oasis that kids attend free day camp during the summer, and a site that all kids are served a nutritious lunch during the summer break from school. Activities provide structure and supervision while parents are at work.

Ten years ago, the playground was rebuilt and brought up to code, except for the basketball court lot. Plans were completed for a double court so tournaments could be held. But municipal & private funds dried up, leaving the court in disrepair. Our city struggles with multiple challenges—an influx of people displaced by the hurricane in Puerto Rico relocated here, immigrants from the Middle East settled here, so a diverse population that need the interaction of kids activities & sports to unite the neighborhood. The basketball court engaged the youth as they get older and after they have outgrown the little kids play areas. New courts will bring in teams from outside the city to compete in summer league and biddy basketball, engaging the city with the county.  Once a year, a large tournament, Sweep the Streets engages youth and adults, bringing in teams from several states. We need your help to create a safe recreational environment that benefits kids who are at risk, engaging them a constructive basketball experience as they grow.
