Save The Art House - Banish the burglars!

From Paul Bickmore

We got burgled. Twice. They made a hole in our wall, and our finances - so we made art. It's what we do. Help us make more art. Help us to repair and fortify our building and get back on our feet for the Autumn!

Update #5

We've totalled up all the PayPal, BACS, cheque and cash donations and added them today, our total is now £8362! Thanks so much to everyone who donated to this fund. The amount raised covered the immediate security work to make our building safer, which was our main goal. Although we didn't reach our target, we are thrilled with the amount raised - please be assured that it has all been put to good use!

Now that Autumn is here, we have a packed programme designed to keep us busy, busy, busy and to get the rest of the total rolling in. We also have an 'Affordable Art Fair' running, as well as new crafts and clothes going out in our shop this week.

Please keep an eye on our programme of events, our new menu and our Facebook page where we'll keep you posted on all our goings-on - and come and see us soon!

More Info

A combination of burglaries, heatwaves and other things have left us with a shortfall, putting The Art House at risk.

Earlier in the year The Art House was broken into not once, but twice within six weeks by maleficent wrongdoers whose misdeeds created much damage and disruption to our beloved haven of calm.

This has put us in a very precarious financial position.

We are insured, as you would expect, but the claims don't cover all the upgrades to our security or any window replacements, nor do they compensate for the time taken by everyone here to spec work, make immediate repairs, get quotes, give statements, file claims and so on.

This has derailed our processes and had a knock-on effect on our income, delaying our new menu, the opening of our icecream shack (while it was actually sunny!) recruiting and training new volunteers, booking performers and so on.

Add all that to the leaking roof, blocked drain, replacement of our chiller cabinet, repair of our air-conditioning, one of our long-term crew moving on, the explosion of new eating places and cafes and the general poor state of the economy, and we find ourselves in need of your help again so that The Art House can survive.

Like many with older premises, we have a "fully repairing lease" which basically means we are responsible for all repairs and maintenance to the building.

In case you are not aware, we're not like most places. We are a Community Interest Company which make us *legally* non-profit.

The Directors won't ever (*can't ever*!) sell up and retire to The New Forest on the proceeds, so every penny you give is safe.

The Art House exists to make the city that little bit more welcoming, colourful and diverse, to spawn-off new projects and provide a supportive community for oddballs and creatives to share their art, their dreams, humour and love of difference.

It costs us £1.25 for *every minute* we are open to keep running, and at the moment we are falling short of the money we need to meet all our costs, plus the extras because of robbers.

Even if you can only afford to give £1.25, that minute is *your* minute - a lot can happen in 60 seconds!

We cost more to run than most places.

That's because we believe in buying locally and organic if we can or, if it must be from abroad, paying often-exploited growers a fair wage for their produce.

We couldn't pass on what we'd need to for our food and drink to cover this, because most of the public wouldn't want to pay it, which is why we have an awe-inspiring team of volunteers that enable us to keep our costs down, so that farmers and their families that we'll never meet can live decently, and we can compete on price in the high street.

Also, our paid staff are paid a fair salary with a set hours contract so they know what to expect at the end of the month (no zero-hours here!) and we are working towards making enough to pay everyone the official living wage - which we were able to do last year, but have been unable to raise due to all the difficulties we've had.

We would like to make it to our tenth anniversary next year and many years beyond that.  Right now, there are big bills looming which make that dicey.

Can you help get us there with an donation, large or small, and help us to our target? We greet all acts of generosity with equal joy.

Update #4

We have gone over £4000 which is fabulous - thanks so much :)

Our total has sadly had to be increased following a very expensive bit on vandalism to our front window, which has to be specially made and is not covered by our insurance due to a previous incident before we moved here :( We have until the end of September to reach a total of £15K, which we need to clear our current deficit and set us up for the Autumn and Winter! We can do it!
